Bloomberg cites the Census Bureau’s latest weekly Household Pulse Survey, revealing almost 30 million Americans went hungry last week. About 23.9 million of 249 million respondents said they had “sometimes not enough to eat.” Around 5.42 million indicated they had “often not enough to eat.” This is the highest total of hungry Americans in the survey since early May, which was around the time when food bank lines across the country were swamped with jobless and hungry folks.

A new report reveals the severity of COVID-19 spreading beyond meatpacking plants to food processing facilities across the US.
The Environmental Working Group (EWG) outlines this new reality of how the fast-spreading virus has infected 1,200 food processing workers at 60 plants from mid-March to early June.
To compile these statics, EWG reviewed news articles of outbreaks and noticed many of the infections were seen at Kraft Heinz, Birds Eye, Conagra, and the Campbell Soup Company’s Pepperidge Farm, as well as those of smaller plants, like Fairmont Foods and Ruiz Foods.
Food Processing Plants With the Most Reported COVID-19 Cases
Bloomberg elaborated on EWG’s findings and said: “These are the first national numbers of their kind. The advocacy group compiled its figures using local media reports because there are no federal agencies reporting the data. The true total is almost certainly higher.”
Bakers, dairy workers, fruit and vegetable packers, many of whom are deemed “essential” have worked through the pandemic, sometimes laboring in tight quarters.
“At our workplace, we were not ready for this virus. We didn’t talk about it. We didn’t know about it,” Paula Zambrano,61, who packs fruit at Borton & Sons in Yakima, Washington. She was so concerned back in April of an outbreak at her plant that she stayed home for three weeks. Low on money, she returned to work to support her family.
“People are infected, and they come to work. They keep quiet about it,” Zambrano said. “We live from our work. We are surviving from our wages. If we have children, how will we feed them?”
In a piece titled “”Cold, Damp & Crowded” – How America’s Meat Plants Are Breeding Grounds For Covid” — we described how meat processing plants had become a breeding ground for the virus — and with EWG’s report this week, similar conditions have been seen across many other types of food processing plants.
EWG estimates at least 1.8 million Americans work in food processing plants. Many of the workers are low-income and minority, their labor in tight workspaces make them susceptible to infection.
America’s food suppliers have seen some of the worst outbreaks of the virus. Dozens of folks at meatpacking plants across the country have died with thousands infected. The ongoing human tragedy at meat and food processing plants expose the vulnerability of the food supply chain.
To solve this issue, we noted how meat processing plants should “unleash a new wave of automation across plants to ease labor and health woes.”
With a health crisis still not abating at many plants — another problem has developed, that is, food shortages and skyrocketing food inflation.
The latest food at home index increased 4.8% over the last 12 months, with all six major grocery store food group indexes rising over that span.

Food banks are reporting unprecedented demand across the US as millions lose jobs, demand for food banks soars
Food banks across the country are struggling to keep up with the overwhelming demand for food, as volunteer numbers sharply decline in the face of the coronavirus.
More than 16.8 million Americans have filed for unemployment in the past three weeks alone, bringing national jobless rates up to 13% and leaving families struggling to get food on the table. In turn, food banks are experiencing a massive influx of hungry Americans, gathering in lengthy lines spanning city blocks or waiting in miles-long traffic to collect groceries from drive-through pantries.
Meanwhile, farmers are being forced to dump thousands of gallons of milk and destroy millions of pounds of fresh produce due to a lack of infrastructure to distribute it to food pantries in need, according to a report from The New York Times. With major buyers like restaurants and schools indefinitely shuttered, farmers are buried under surplus food but don’t have the resources and volunteer manpower necessary to physically transport it to food banks.
Food banks across the United States are struggling amid droves of hungry Americans in need of a meal. And images from photographers around the country show the horrifying number of Americans lining up to receive food assistance.

“We’re looking at an increase of 17.1 million people over the course of the next six months,” Claire Babineaux-Fontenot, CEO of Feeding America, one of the country’s largest hunger-relief organizations, told NBC News. Babineaux-Fontenot highlighted a 98 percent increase in demand for free food and Feeding America, expects to lose $1.4 billion trying to survive.

Des Moines, Iowa: Over 100,000 Iowans filed first time claims for unemployment in the last three weeks. People started lining up 3 hours before the food distribution began.
In San Antonio, ten thousand cars waited at a food distribution point run by the San Antonio Food Bank. CEO Eric Cooper told NBC’s Hoda Kotb on the Today Show that the bank typically feeds about 60,000 people a week—it’s now about 120,000 people a week.
According to the Guardian, the number of people lining up in Phoenix, Arizona has tripled. Across southern Arizona, it doubled. In Las Vegas, where demand is up by 30 percent, one of the largest food pantries has shuttered 170 out of 180 locations. In Massachusetts, food pantries increased distribution by 849 percent.

Sheila Christopher, director of Hunger-Free Pennsylvania, told the Guardian that she’s “been in this business over 30 years, and nothing compares to what we’re seeing now.” Jennifer McLean, the CEO of NYC’s City Harvest, told the New York Times that the need they’re seeing now dwarfs other crises like Hurricane Sandy and even September 11th.
