When God placed Adam in the garden He told him to “dress and keep it”. Adam was to be it’s gardener. Isn’t that interesting? Adam worked in the garden.

Six-Thousand-Year Calls "Where Are You?"

Another of the instructions God gave to Adam was in regard to what he should and should not eat. And this is where many stray from the Biblical creation narrative. Only to be taken down the wide road in the error of the doctrine of original sin and sin nature. But, we can avoid those heresies if we will pay close attention to what is plainly written here. And believe it.

Adam was instructed that of all the trees in the garden he could freely eat except one. The tree of the knowledge of good and evil. Adam was also instructed that if he did eat from this one tree that in the day he ate of it he would “surely die”. Now the phrase “surely die” has the literal meaning in the Hebrew of “dying, you shall die”. Or better said, beginning to die you will die. This will aid us in our understanding of the kind of death came to Adam as we continue through this portion of scripture.

Here’s the account as it reads in the scripture;

“And the Lord God took the man, and put him into the garden of Eden to dress it and to keep it.

And the Lord God commanded the man, saying, Of every tree of the garden thou mayest freely eat:

But of the tree of the knowledge of good and evil, thou shalt not eat of it: for in the day that thou eatest thereof thou shalt surely die.

And the Lord God said, It is not good that the man should be alone; I will make him an help meet for him.” Gen.2:15-17

First, isn’t it interesting that even though after creating everything in 6 days and then saying that it was “very good”, now we see God saying there was something that was “not good”? Do you think this was an oversight by God? I don’t.

I believe that God arranged this in this way to emphasize the blessing the woman would be to the man when He would give her to him. And we will see as we go through this section of scripture that the woman being given for Adam so he would not be alone, would serve a much greater purpose than just being an help meet for him and the method by which mankind would “fill the earth”.

In the next couple of verses we see Adam exercising his free will for the first time, a part of the image of God in Adam given in Gen.1:26, in the naming of all the animals that God brought before him. This part reads like this,

In His Image (+ Q&A) | Genesis 1:26-27 - Raintree ...

“And out of the ground the Lord God formed every beast of the field, and every fowl of the air; and brought them unto Adam to see what he would call them: and whatsoever Adam called every living creature, that was the name thereof.

And Adam gave names to all cattle, and to the fowl of the air, and to every beast of the field; but for Adam there was not found an help meet for him.

And the Lord God caused a deep sleep to fall upon Adam, and he slept: and he took one of his ribs, and closed up the flesh instead thereof;

And the rib, which the Lord God had taken from man, made he a woman, and brought her unto the man.

And Adam said, This is now bone of my bones, and flesh of my flesh: she shall be called Woman, because she was taken out of Man.

Therefore shall a man leave his father and his mother, and shall cleave unto his wife: and they shall be one flesh.

And they were both naked, the man and his wife, and were not ashamed.” Gen.2:19,20

Please notice something here in what was said about the woman? It is very instructive in helping us to see just exactly what God says man was when He made them. Notice Adam said she was now “bone of my bone and flesh of my flesh”. And that when they cleaved to one another they would be “one flesh”.

Does it seem to you that something is missing? Something that many have wrongly been taught was part of Adam when God made him? Did you notice God didn’t say that cleaving to one another the man and woman would become one spirit? In fact, there is no mention of spirit here or anywhere else in the creation narrative as being a part of man when God made him.

But, many would argue that the spirit was the breath placed in man when God breathed into his nostrils. But, Gen.7:15,22 prove this to be wrong. Using verses like John20:22 out of context when Jesus breathed on the disciples and told them to receive the Holy Spirit. Some even pour the idea that it was a spirit God placed in Adam when He said “Let us make man in our image”. Again assuming that it was the spirit that was the image of God implied here.

Many conclude that this last example must be true because they have assumed that as Father, Son, and Holy Spirit God is a three part being because of the heretical doctrine called the trinity. And by analogy for us to be made in His image we must also be a 3 part being. But, there is never any such inference or analogy given anywhere in the Bible. But, only that the Godhead is made up of 3 persons that are one in love as John17:20- 23 plainly says. So again, they have made it up out of whole cloth.

So without assuming anything, but instead believing what these verses plainly say, these verses that we have read so far say nothing that should cause us to believe man had a spirit when God made him. We see only flesh and bone and air(breath). No spirit.

In fact, when we look closely at Gen.2:7 we have seen that the “living soul” that Adam became was made up of only two parts which are the body and the air breathed into the body. This means that the living soul that God Siamese Adam was when He made him is in all actuality just a body that breathes. Which is why Strong’s Concordance got this right when it defines a living soul to be “a living breathing creature”.

Genesis 2:7 Then the Lord God formed the man from the dust ...

Because when those parts are brought together it is what makes the soul that has natural life. So we see from the plain language in scripture that believing that God made man man a 3 part being of body, soul, and spirit is incorrect. This is important and becomes very critical as we discover the effects Adam’s choices had on himself and the rest of mankind.

Not as a “federal head” as some believe whose punishment was imputed to the rest of mankind. But, simply because it took man from the garden and placed him in a world where death reigned.

Since God made Adam he was always a natural being. There was no death in the garden because he was able to eat from the tree of life. It was only when he was no longer allowed to eat from the tree of life that his natural life began to wane. This is why death began to reign in the earth. Not a punishment for disobedience. But, only the next phase that included the knowledge of good and evil in God’s plan for mankind to become heirs to His kingdom.

They would live in the garden until the day they would eat from the tree of the knowledge of good and evil. When that day came some things happened that will give us some insight as to who these two people were when God made them. And how their choices effected them, and us, their progeny.

For it was on that day, the day they ate from the tree of the knowledge of good and evil, that something miraculous happened. Their eyes were opened and they both KNEW that they were naked. This knowing is very important to the narrative. Because when God made them they knew none of this. It was only after they ate that they had the knowledge of both good and evil.

And after they knew were naked they began making some choices that reveals to us why God made them only flesh and blood the way He did. And God’s purposes that would come to pass as a result of their choices.

But, unlike Adam and Eve when they were made, we are now because of their choice to eat from the tree of the knowledge of good and evil, fully equipped to make choices that have eternal consequences. Whereas theirs only affected them as they related to the natural world around them. Gen.3:16-19 giving testament to this.

And make them we do. And of eternal consequence they are. Every day we make choices that can affect our eternity. The most important of which is the ultimate criteria by which we make those choices. Because our ultimate criteria for our choices shows who or what we have believed is God.

I want to conclude by asking you, have you made the choice to trust in Jesus with all your heart, mind, soul, and strength? Do you understand that His death and resurrection was necessary for your life in eternity? Because when we trust in His death and resurrection we show that we have realized that the need He satisfied for us was the only reason He joined with mankind in our death. So that He could conquer it by His resurrection.

If you have not trusted in Jesus as Lord and savior then what are you waiting for? There is no greater way He can show His love for you than joining with you in death. And defeating death by His resurrection so you could join with Him in eternal life. Trust in Him today and have the eternal life that only He can give. Pray to Him and receive the gift of life that only He can provide for you. Because only Jesus has conquered death. This is why He said that He alone is “the way, the truth, and the life. No man comes to the Father except through me”.

When you have confessed Jesus as Lord, and believed He has raised from the dead, then I can truly say, See you there or in the air!
