California and New Jersey governors ordered National Guard troops this week to help with their COVID-19 response. Guard personnel would be sent to long-term care facilities such as nursing homes around the state, according to New Jersey Governor Phil Murphy, a Democrat. “While the Omicron variant surges across the country, this deployment will send members of our National Guard to long-term care institutions with staffing needs and will act to preserve the health and safety of long-term-care residents,” Murphy said in a statement. The approximately 150 Guard members will assist residents with daily activities and meal preparation in addition to testing and screening employees, residents, and visitors.
