California & New Jersey Governors Order National Guard to Assist the Medical Facilities They Purged.

California and New Jersey governors ordered National Guard troops this week to help with their COVID-19 response. Guard personnel would be sent to long-term care facilities such as nursing homes around the state, according to New Jersey Governor Phil Murphy, a Democrat. “While the Omicron variant surges across the country, this deployment will send members of our National Guard to long-term care institutions with staffing needs and will act to preserve the health and safety of long-term-care residents,” Murphy said in a statement. The approximately 150 Guard members will assist residents with daily activities and meal preparation in addition to testing and screening employees, residents, and visitors. According to state health officials, there are 513 long-term care institutions in New Jersey with active COVID-19 outbreaks.
