The problem with heavy metal music is sometimes one of association. In the hands of the unsaved world, heavy metal almost always embraces death and pain and suicide and drugs and anger (metal is very rarely “happy music”). Believers have to be careful not to get sucked into the culture of nihilism and antisocialism that metal usually promotes. While it is true that pain and death are a part of life, the key to overcoming those things is not anger or suicide or revenge. The answer is the gospel of Jesus Christ (Romans 1:16). There is nothing in the Bible that praises or glorifies death in the least, so neither should our music. Lyrics that violate biblical guidelines or celebrate or exalt sinful conduct are not appropriate for Christians.
With any kind of music, including Christian heavy metal, we must ask, “Is the music glorifying Christ, or does it glorify anger, lust, demonism, or some other sinful thing?” The style of the music is really irrelevant. It’s what the music communicates to our hearts and minds that matters, either through lyrics or even through the notes and instruments themselves. No style of music is actually “wrong”; it’s what the musicians do with the music that makes it either “right” or “wrong.”

The Singaporean government made headlines in March for canceling a concert by Swedish black metal band Watain, just hours before they were set to perform, over what one official described as the band’s anti-Christian lyrics. The conservative push to have the notorious band banned from playing began with a viral petition on Change.org.
Yesterday, the activist who created that petition, Rachel Chan, launched a new appeal on Change.org to have more performances by “extreme (death and black) metal bands” that are scheduled to play in Singapore stopped, just like Watain’s.
Chan’s new petition includes snippets of the Wikipedia definitions for death metal and black metal, such as the bands expressing “extreme anti-Christian and misanthropic views, advocating various forms of Satanism of ethnic paganism”.
The petition also lists the four upcoming performances that it seeks to prevent: a concert by Dutch death metal band Pestilence scheduled for June 7; the Metal United World Wide festival on June 15; a gig by Canadian death metal band Cryptopsy on July 5; and a performance by Swedish melodic death metal band Soilwork on October 29.
Since it was posted yesterday, the petition has gained over 23,000 signatures, already equalling the number of people who signed the petition to ban Watain (as well as Soilwork) from Singapore.
Will this new petition lead to the government intervening once again in already scheduled concerts to protect the ears of our country’s youth? Based on their response to the Watain controversy, there’s certainly a chance it could, but it may depend on the specific lyrics of each band, particularly in terms of how they address religion.
After Watain’s concert was canceled by the Info-Communications Media and Development Authority (IMDA), Law and Home Affairs Minister K. Shanmugam said that the band’s anti-Christian lyrics were “so far out” that the decision to ban their Singapore performance was a no-brainer.
“I saw (Watain’s) lyrics – it’s four-letter words on Jesus Christ, on Christianity, on religion, abusing the cross – everything that is so far out that I can’t see how we could have agreed to (the concert),” Shanmugam told Channel NewsAsia. Source

One of the mysteries of the Christian life is why God didn’t destroy Satan immediately after Satan sinned. We know that God will one day defeat Satan by throwing him into the Lake of Fire where he will be tortured day and night forever (Revelation 20:10), but sometimes we wonder why God has not destroyed Satan already. Perhaps we will never know God’s exact reasoning, but we do know certain things about His nature.
First, we know God is absolutely sovereign over all creation, and this includes Satan. Certainly, Satan and his demons wreak havoc in the world, but they are only allowed a certain amount of freedom. We also know that God has planned everything from the beginning of time to the end. Nothing can thwart His plans, and things are proceeding exactly on schedule. “The LORD of hosts has sworn: ‘As I have planned, so shall it be, and as I have purposed, so shall it stand’” (Isaiah 14:24).
Second, “we know that all things work together for good to those who love God, to those who are called according to His purpose” (Romans 8:28). Whatever God has planned for Satan, that plan will be the best one possible. God’s perfect wrath and justice will be satisfied, and His perfect righteousness will be glorified. Those who love Him and who wait for His plan to be fulfilled will be thrilled to be part of that plan and will praise and glorify Him as they see it unfold.
Third, we know that to question God’s plan and its timing is to question God Himself, His judgment, His character and His very nature. It is not wise to question His right to do exactly as He pleases. The psalmist tells us, “As for God, His way is perfect” (Psalm 18:30). Whatever plan comes from the mind of the Almighty is the best plan possible. It is true that we can’t expect to understand that mind perfectly, as He reminds us, “‘For my thoughts are not your thoughts, neither are your ways my ways,’ says the LORD. ‘For as the heavens are higher than the earth, so are my ways higher than your ways and my thoughts than your thoughts’” (Isaiah 55:8-9). Nevertheless, our responsibility to God is to obey Him, to trust Him, and to submit to His will, whether we understand it or not. In the case of His timing for Satan’s demise, it has to be the best possible plan because it is God’s plan.
