JESUS’ SACRIFICE FOR SIN- IS IT ONCE FOR ALL? OR AT LEAST ONCE DAILY

as so many falsely teach? Jesus was the final once for all sacrifice. So says Heb.10:10. And this sacrifice was for the whole world. So says John3:16.

Now since His was the final once for all sacrifice, why is it that so many believe and teach that they need to return over and over and over again to beg forgiveness as if His sacrifice needs to be done over and over again as Israel did under the law? Don’t they believe Jesus’ sacrifice was greater than that of bulls and goats? Don’t they believe it was the once for all sacrifice for sins? “Once” meaning there is no more need to get forgiveness for sin because the once for all sin sacrifice has “taken away” the covenant that caused sins to be imputed. This is not to say we have not sinned as those John said in 1John1. But, only that sins are not imputed.

When Israel performed the yearly sacrifice for sins they never asked forgiveness again for those sins that were already forgiven. Because they were forgiven. But, since those sacrifices had to be done year after year because only those sins from the year prior were dealt with, they continually had to come back with sacrifices for forgiveness of sins committed in each successive year.

But, since Jesus’ sacrifice is ONCE for all there is no need to return over and over again as Israel did. Sacrificing Jesus as Israel did the bulls and goats for forgiveness. Especially not day after day, as some falsely preach because they twist what 1John1:9 says, to get forgiveness of sins that Jesus’ once for all time sacrifice has already forgiven. Because once and for all Jesus’ sacrifice has forgiven all sin. Heb.10:9,10 says this was done by taking away the first covenant and establishing the second.

The only scriptures that say believers are to ask forgiveness are scriptures that deal with horizontal relationships. Not our relationship with God through Christ Jesus. We ask forgiveness from each other when an offense has occurred. This is found in James 5:16.

James 5:16 | Prayers, Scripture of the day, Powerful ...

But, those who say the believer must go back over and over again daily to get forgiveness from God are actually saying they believe that the sacrifices of bulls and goats was more effective than the sacrifice of Jesus. Because the sacrifices of bulls and goats only had to be done once a year for forgiveness of sins during the year prior and those sins were forgotten. Never to be sacrificed for again. But, these believe that Jesus’ sacrifice for forgiveness of sins must be done daily for forgiveness of sins that 1John1:9 says have already been forgiven. What utter blasphemy!

Paul says in 2 Cor.5:19,20 that the ministry of reconciliation the believer is to take to the world is that God is not imputing their trespasses to them. This dove tails perfectly with what we read in Heb.10. Because if Jesus’ sacrifice was the once for all sacrifice for sin then all sin is forgiven and taken away. This is why sin is not imputed to anyone anymore. And especially no longer needs to be brought up for forgiveness over and over again for the believer. But, only once when a person comes to faith in Jesus as 1 John 1 teaches.

But, if this is true, and of course it is, you might be wondering why isn’t everyone saved? Why does anyone go to hell if God does not hold them accountable for sins? The answer to this is that being bad is not why men are kept out of heaven. Any more than being good is why men are allowed into heaven. Because our salvation is not by works + faith. It is by grace through faith without works as Paul plainly says in Eph .2:8,9.

So when we think of Jesus’ sacrifice being once for all it will help when we remember how sacrifices worked for Israel under the law. In that covenant a representative for all of Israel who was called the high priest went into the holy of holies once a year to offer sacrifice for his sins and all the sins of all the people. When God accepted the sacrifice the sins of all the people of Israel were forgiven. But, only for the year prior because these sacrifices were not the final once for all sacrifice for sins. Jesus’ was.

The reason for this is that Jesus represents a different priesthood. A priesthood that Heb.7:16 says was made after the power of an endless life. The Melchisedec priesthood. Not Aaron’s. This is why Heb.7 tells us-

“But this man(Jesus), because he continueth ever, hath an unchangeable priesthood.

Wherefore he is able also to save them to the uttermost that come unto God by him, seeing he ever liveth to make intercession for them.

For such an high priest became us, who is holy, harmless, undefiled, separate from sinners, and made higher than the heavens; Who needeth not daily, as those high priests, to offer up sacrifice, first for his own sins, and then for the people’s: for this he did once, when he offered up himself.

For the law maketh men high priests which have infirmity; but the word of the oath, which was since the law, maketh the Son, who is consecrated for evermore.” Vs.24-28

So the difference between the sacrifices offered by the high priest and Jesus’ sacrifice was that the high priest had to do this once a year every year and Jesus’ does not. Because those sacrifices only dealt with the past sins and according to the law. But, Jesus’ sacrifice was a one and done sacrifice. Because His sacrifice deals with all sin for all time. His sacrifice took away the sins of the whole world for all time for all men.

In the Old Covenant Israel’s sins being forgiven was only part of the process. Along with those sacrifices they also had to trust in God to have eternal life. And when Jesus came as a man under the law, it was Him they must now recognize as their messiah trusting in Him as they had always trusted in God, and keep the commandments for eternal life. So says Jesus to the rich young ruler in Mark 10:17-21. And so says Heb.10 when it describes the Hebrew who after being in covenant with God has “trodden under foot the blood of the covenant”.

But, in the New Covenant the once for all sacrifice for sin is done. It was accomplished by Jesus 2,000 years ago. Never needing to be repeated ever again. This is why all that is left for men men to do now to have eternal life is to believe in Jesus. In Rom.10:9,10 Paul says we do this by first confessing that Jesus is Lord. And then believing that He has raised from the dead.

It is because Jesus’ sacrifice was the once for all sacrifice for the sins of the whole world that this is true. And is why works play no role in how we are saved or how we stay saved. Because sins have been dealt with by Jesus’ sacrifice once and for all time at the cross 2,000 years ago. By taking away the first covenant wherein sins were imputed. And replacing it with a New Covenant wherein they are not imputed. So that all that is needed now is for men to trust in Jesus for eternal life. To say to Him as He said to the Father, “Nevertheless not my will but thy will be done”. This is “the faith of Christ” that justifies men that Paul spoke of in Gal.2:16.

Can you say that? Will you submit your will to the will of God as Jesus did? If you will then you too can have eternal life. Because our justification comes to us the same way Jesus’ justification did. By faith. Because faith is what joins us to Jesus. Sins, bad behaviors, are not the problem. Whether or not we know Jesus is. Because now the only thing that stands between the unbeliever and eternal life is knowing Him. Believing in Him. Because in John 17:3 Jesus says knowing Him IS eternal life. And in John 16:9 Jesus said the sin of the world that He sent the Holy Spirit to reprove the world of is “They believe not on me”.

Pray this prayer if you believe in Him and want to have eternal life.

Dear Jesus, thank you for joining with me in death so that I can join with you in eternal life. Thank you that you are not like the fictitious Santa Claus who gives gifts based on bad or good behavior. And that the gift of eternal life is for all who want to know you. Help me to know you more and more. In Jesus’ name, Amen.

If you prayed that prayer with me then welcome to God’s family. Now read and believe what the Bible plainly says so that you grow in your relationship with God. Because to know Him is eternal life.
