The Royal College of Speech and Language Therapists (RCSLT) is “extremely concerned” about the number of toddlers in the United Kingdom who are having difficulty communicating as a result of frequent lockdowns. Therapists and charities are concerned about a rapid loss in speech and motor abilities, with language treatment requests tripling. Children (and adults) receive speech and language therapy to assist them in communicating. The RCSLT’s chief executive, Kamini Gadhok, told the Telegraph that its members are “extremely concerned” about the number of children who are having difficulty communicating, and that member therapists are unable to meet demand. “The larger the difference by the time the child is five,” she explained, “the more difficult it is to bridge.” Without early help, Gadhok said, young children are considerably more likely to develop emotional and behavioral difficulties.
