It appears that one of the only skills that matters these days to get a job at a university is being a social justice warrior. Apparently, the standards have been lowered quite a bit.
Currently, Northwestern University is seeking an assistant director to help develop “social justice education” programs for fraternity and sorority members.
Campus Reform reports, “The new ‘Assistant Director, Fraternity and Sorority Life’ will be responsible not only for advising fraternity and sororities, responding to emergency situations, and ensuring adherence to university policies, but also for assisting in the coordination of ‘social justice education’ programming.”
All qualified applicants should have at least three years of work with Greek houses, knowledge of a “highly selective” school like Northwestern, and most importantly social justice experience. It wouldn’t hurt to have a Master’s Degree, but the “highly selective” Northwestern isn’t splitting hairs. Any other “appropriate combination” of work and educational experience will be fine.

In particular, the university is seeking applicants capable of creating “an environment of understanding” and challenging “organizational practices and policies that may be exclusionary” based on “input from a wide variety of people and functions.”
Those skills will likely come into play when the new assistant director begins to “assist in the coordination of thematic programmatic/educational initiatives,” which can include leadership/community development, harm reduction/risk management, or social justice education.
Sounds riveting and worthwhile! Kinda like the programs already offered through Northwestern’s Student Affairs office: “Deconstructing whiteness” and “deconstructing masculinity.”
Does that mean applicants should be non-white and non-male for the best chance? Is Northwestern an equal opportunity employer? Asking for a friend.
