Imagine the care required to ensure that the stones fit exactly when they arrived at the temple site! Three-dimensional accuracy was required in the quarry, as no iron tool pounding was to be heard there. Each block was custom-made to fit exactly with the blocks beside and below it.
Peter describes believers as living stones (1 Peter 2:4-5). What type of parallels can we draw here? The author of Hebrews declared Jesus to be the architect of God’s eternal temple (Hebrews 3:3-4). He must form us so that we fit precisely into the location God intended for us, which involves blending in with our surroundings. We all have a calling and a place in the temple. But what does this silent action represent?
The pounding, sculpting, and noisy activity should take place outside the temple grounds. When we gather to worship, it is not the time to argue over our disagreements. There, we quietly admire His glory or shout His praises. There, our focus is on the wonder of our Savior rather than how we fit in with the stone next to us. O come, let us worship Him. Turn your focus to Jesus.
The hammering and shaping should occur in the quarry. We should let the Lord shape us one-on-one. The spots where we don’t fit in with the other living stones must be chiseled away. That noisy and often painful action takes place in the quarry with Jesus so that we do not disrupt the focus of others when we assemble to worship collectively. Are you allowing Him to remove the obstacles in your life that prevent you from fitting in with the rest of the building?
Spend time alone with God and allow Him to make some changes in you so that you can fit in with the other living stones.
1 Kings 6:7 7In building the temple, only blocks dressed at the quarry were used, and no hammer, chisel or any other iron tool was heard at the temple site while it was being built.
