SEATTLE — Mary Kay Letourneau, a teacher who married her former sixth-grade student after she was convicted of raping him in a case that drew international headlines, has died. She was 58.
Her lawyer David Gehrke told multiple news outlets Letourneau died Tuesday of cancer. He did not immediately return an email from The Associated Press.
Letourneau was a married mother of four having difficulties with her marriage in 1996 when Vili Fualaau was a precocious 12-year-old in Letourneau’s class at Shorewood Elementary in Burien, a south Seattle suburb.
At about 1:20 a.m. on June 19, 1996, police discovered them in a minivan parked at the Des Moines Marina.
Letourneau, then 34, initially told officers the boy was 18, raising suspicions that something sexual was going on. But back at the police station, Fualaau and Letourneau denied there had been any “touching.” Instead, they said, Letourneau had been babysitting the boy and took him from her home after she and her husband had a fight.
About two months after the marina incident, Letourneau became pregnant with the couple’s first daughter. Their second child was conceived in 1998, after Letourneau had pleaded guilty to child rape and received a 7½-year prison term.
A former Chatsworth teacher has been arrested in connection with the sexual assault of a child last year, and authorities are seeking additional victims.
Steven Clark, 48, was arrested Tuesday on suspicion of rape, unlawful sex with a minor “and numerous related charges with one identified victim,” Los Angeles Police Department officials said in a news release Wednesday.
Clark previously worked as a teacher at Chaminade Middle School in Chatsworth. Police said the crimes occurred in 2019, but did not elaborate on where they took place, nor did they offer any additional details about the victim.
Clark’s bail was set at $475,000, police said.
Detectives are seeking additional victims who may not have reported similar crimes committed by the suspect.

KING COUNTY, Wash. — A Federal Way middle school math teacher who is accused of raping a student has been charged with three counts of second-degree child rape.
According to court documents, Glenfield Arthur Watkins of Tacoma allegedly raped a student repeatedly in his classroom at Totem Middle School, located in Kent, between 2015 and 2016. He was 55 at the time.
Watkins told the student she was cute and beautiful, and that is when the relationship progressed, according to court papers.Content Continues Below
It was not until early April of 2020 that investigators found out about the allegations against Watkins, documents state. The teen revealed to a mentor what happened during a meeting. That mentor told her boss, who then reported it to the school district’s administration.
Watkins was placed on leave by the district.
When police were contacted, they interviewed the teen who said it all started when she was 13-year-old and in the seventh grade, court papers state.
Police also interviewed Watkins who told them the teen was his student in the seventh and eighth grades, and he tutored her in math most days after school but denied any sexual relationship with the girl, according to court records.
Watkins is scheduled to appear in court in Kent next Tuesday afternoon.
The Federal Way School District released a statement that said in part it is “cooperating with law enforcement” and that “the student who reported the allegations was connected with support resources.”
