WHAT THE BIBLE SPECIFICALLY SAYS ABOUT TRANSGENDER BEHAVIOR—THAT IT IS AN “ABOMINATION.”
Transgenderism’s embrace by popular culture presents Christians with difficult choices. Among those is the issue of personal pronouns: words such as he, him, his, or she, her, and hers. In some situations, those who wish to identify as the opposite of their biological sex prefer to be spoken of using pronouns that correspond to their preference, not their biology. For example, a male who self-identifies as female might ask to be referred to as “she” or “her.”
Beyond this, some persons claim to be completely different genders or combinations of genders. Such persons might ask to be referred to using pronouns such as they or them, or even “new” words like xi, xim, or xer.
So, does that mean a Christian can or should use “preferred pronouns,” even just to be polite? Or should believers make a point of not using such terms at all, to avoid endorsing something untrue? As with any specific issues, the Bible does not give an explicit, word-for-word answer. There is no “thou shall” or “thou shalt not” for the use of modern preferred pronouns. What believers can do is look for guiding principles in order to make the best choice in a given situation.
In short, while Christians need to be careful and respectful, respect cannot extend to endorsing ideas that the Bible calls false. Whatever choice a Christian makes with respect to preferred pronouns, it’s important that they not give the appearance of endorsing sin or self-deception.
Biblical arguments against transgender identity
Robert Gagnon, a scholar who has studied the related issue of the Bible’s stance on homosexuality for 15 years, addressed each of Ackley’s verses but began by citing a different verse in 1 Corinthians. He pointed to 1 Corinthians 6:9, where the Apostle Paul includes a group called “malakoi” or “soft men” in a list of those “who will not inherit the kingdom of God.”
The professor listed various groups in the ancient Biblical setting who attempted to transform their masculinity into femininity: assinnus, kurgarrûs, or kulu’us; the galli. Deuteronomy 23:18 labels a similar group “an abomination,” Gagnon argued, listing other passages which mention these effeminate men (Deut 23:17-18; 1 Kings 14:24; 15:12; 22:46; 2 Kings 23:7; cf. Job 36:14).
Addressing Matthew 19:12, the verse about natural-born eunuchs, the Pittsburgh professor argued that “neither the born-eunuchs nor made-eunuchs have made themselves eunuchs.” The only group that voluntarily chooses to be eunuchs “does so only in a metaphorical sense, for they do not mar their body or seek to change their sex in any way.” Instead, they merely refrain from sexual relations, which are only licit in a marriage between one man and one woman.
Similarly, “Paul’s remark in Gal 3:28 that ‘there is no male and female’ was applied to the status of women before God, not as a basis for eliminating sexual differentiation or legitimizing attempts to change one’s sex,” Gagnon wrote. He acknowledged that Jesus taught that there will be no marriage in the kingdom of God, but until that time, sexual activity must only happen in marriage.
Gagnon admitted that, for some people who embrace a gender identity at odds with their birth sex, some parts of the brain may function like the opposite sex. Nevertheless, chromosomes, genitalia, other external features, and hormones all fit one’s birth sex, showing God’s design.
Transsexuality instead reminded Gagnon of an ancient Christian heresy, Gnosticism, which condemned the material world in favor of the spiritual world. “Attempts to erase one’s birth sex have a quasi-gnostic feel: the dominant features of the body do not matter,” the Pittsburgh professor wrote. He even hinted that transsexuality may merely be a further expression of homosexuality, which also dishonors the natural sex given by God.

These people are “filled with all unrighteousness, sexual immorality, wickedness, covetousness, maliciousness; full of envy, murder, strife, deceit. They are gossips, slanderers, God-haters, insolent, proud, boastful, inventors of evil things, and disobedient toward parents, without understanding, covenant breakers, without natural affection, calloused, and unmerciful, who know the righteous requirement of God, that those who commit such things are worthy of death. They not only do them, but also give hearty approval to those who practice them” (Rom. 1:29-31).
The entire point of the Bible is salvation through Jesus Christ. After repentance and turning from a life in which God was not worshipped, the sin of these people is not their sexual perversion but that they:
“They changed the glory of the incorruptible God into an image made like corruptible man, birds, four-footed beasts, and creeping things. Therefore God gave them up to uncleanness through the lusts of their hearts, to dishonor their own bodies among themselves. They turned the truth of God into a lie and worshipped and served the creature rather than the Creator, who is blessed forever. Amen” (Rom. 1:23-25).
Everyone who chooses to believe God’s truth, who serves the Creator, can turn from wickedness. The indictment of transgendered people is that of all people. As is the solution. However, the Bible does not condone transgender or other sexually deviant behavior because they are identified as “an abomination” to God.
Abominations do not fit in the “Golden Rule.” LGBTQ should re-read the Ten Commandments and Proverbs 6:16-19. His transgender policy falls into nearly all of the six behaviors that God specifically identifies that he hates and are an abomination to Him: “haughty eyes, a lying tongue, a heart that devises wicked plans, feet that run rapidly to evil, a false witness who utters lies, and one who spreads strife among brothers.”

Abominations have nothing to do with eunuchs, Joseph or any other person in the Bible, except perhaps for those who were so wicked that God brought a flood to destroy the entire Earth in Genesis and later turned an entire city of people into a pile of salt.
