The COVID-19 pandemic has resulted in increased screen time, alcohol use, and poor sleep among teens, according to a report published in June by researchers from the University of Sydney. According to studies, the increase has long-term ramifications for teen health.

Dr. Lauren Gardner, Research Fellow at the University’s Matilda Centre for Research Excellence in Mental Health and Substance Use, said, “We know these lifestyle risk behaviors are common among young people, but we also know they are key predictors of chronic diseases later in life, such as cancer, cardiovascular disease, and mental disorders.”

The study’s authors were particularly concerned about a rise in alcohol intake, recreational screen time, and insufficient sleep, especially among females.

The research looked at survey responses from over 1,000 Australian teenagers from New South Wales, Queensland, and Western Australia, with an average age of 12.6 years.

During the pandemic, researchers compared reactions across a two-year period from pre-pandemic 2019 to 2021. The researchers looked at patterns in six critical lifestyle habits that put teenagers at risk for chronic illness later in life. Physical inactivity, a poor diet, recreational screen time, insufficient sleep, alcohol use, and smoking are all examples.

Overall, the researchers discovered an 8% rise in youth spending more than two hours per day on recreational screen usage. During the pandemic, 94% of questioned youths reported excessive recreational screen use, compared to 86 percent before the pandemic.

A survey done in the United States in 2021 revealed similar results, with average daily screen use of 7.7 hours, nearly twice the pre-pandemic estimate of 3.8 hours.

“Adolescents’ anxiety and tension rose as screen usage increased, while their coping abilities decreased,” stated lead author Dr. Jason Nagata.

“While social media and video chat can generate social connection and support, we found that most teenage screen usage during the pandemic did not,” Nagata said.

In addition to the rise in screen time, a higher percentage of youths reported drinking alcohol, rising from 2% to 10% of survey respondents. While researchers expected alcohol use to climb as the group grew older, they were shocked to discover that ladies consumed more than males.

From 2019 to 2021, sleep duration was said to have risen. Inadequate sleep, defined as sleep duration of less than 8 to 11 hours, was still more common among females than males, with about a third of female respondents reporting insufficient sleep.

Other risk factors, like as smoking, eating a bad diet, and being physically inactive, have also increased. The gains were not substantial, according to the researchers, despite being linked to the pandemic.

The latest study, according to Prof. Maree Teesson, director of the Matilda Centre, “confirms earlier worldwide studies emphasizing the COVID-19 pandemic’s varying impact across nations and within regions.”

“It’s critical to assist young people in improving or maintaining beneficial health practices,” she added. “The pandemic’s full impact on children and young people is now being acknowledged globally.”

Large scale events such as these can have more of an impact on youth than those who have experienced decades of economic stability and peace. At times like these, the youth feel discouraged; Incapable of conceptualizing how they could contribute to this fiasco in any meaningful way. A wrecked economy, and a Godless society is all we’ve been left with. We have to walk the streets knowing that the word of God & morality is a joke to the general population, and press forward despite the scrutiny. It’s laughable to assume we’d have any opportunity purchase a home within our lifetimes.

Regardless, as i’ve said those of us who are in varying stages of life are alive during these times for a reason. It’s our duty as followers of Christ to save souls during these times. Not to participate in the condescending rhetoric seen throughout the political sphere. We’re meant to love our neighbor as Jesus instructed. With enough love, patience, and understanding, you can make a person feel heard and understood; Breaking down the walls built around their hearts. This is how you convince non-believers that Jesus is the way, and that compassion can change the world. Stay inquisitive in the word of God, and the world around you.

Oklahoma Gov. Kevin Stitt signed a bill into law on Wednesday that prohibits abortion from the moment of conception, with a few exceptions.

Oklahoma HB 4327 is presently the most stringent abortion ban in the United States. It forbids doctors from performing abortions once a pregnancy has been confirmed. There are certain exceptions, such as if the abortion is judged essential to preserve the mother’s life. Another exemption is if the pregnancy was caused by rape or incest and was reported to the authorities.

“As governor, I promised Oklahomans that I would sign every pro-life bill that came across my desk, and I am glad to uphold that commitment today,” said Stitt, a first-term Republican.

“We have a responsibility as human beings to do everything we can to preserve the baby’s life and the mother’s life from the time life begins at conception.” That’s what I think, and the majority of Oklahomans believe as well.”

The law is modeled after Texas’ Heartbeat Act, which allows private citizens to file a civil action against anyone who performs or assists a woman in obtaining an abortion, with the potential to recover at least $10,000 in statutory damages for each abortion performed, aided, or abetted in violation of the ban. The provision, however, prevents the mother seeking an abortion from being sued.

Texas was the first state to establish a statute with this type of enforcement mechanism, and the Texas Act has been in place since September 2021, despite judicial challenges.

Abortion is defined as “the act of using, prescribing, administering, procuring, or selling any instrument, medicine, drug, or any other substance, device, or means with the knowledge that the termination by any of those means will with reasonable probability cause the death of an unborn child,” according to the text of HB 4327.

The use, prescription, administration, procurement, or sale of Plan B, morning-after pills, or any other kind of contraception or emergency contraception is not included in the legislation’s definition of abortion.

The act must also be undertaken to “rescue the life or protect the health of the unborn child,” “remove a dead unborn child caused by spontaneous abortion,” or “remove an ectopic pregnancy,” according to the law. Ectopic pregnancy is a potentially life-threatening situation in which a fertilized egg implants outside the uterus.

The bill is one of at least three that the Oklahoma legislature has enacted this year. SB 612 and SB 1503 are the other two bills.

Stitt signed SB 1503, sometimes known as the “Oklahoma Heartbeat Act,” into law in early May, and two of Oklahoma’s four abortion facilities ceased operations as a result. It prohibits abortion if heart activity is found, which normally occurs at six weeks of pregnancy, and it is enforced similarly to the Texas Heartbeat Act.

SB 612, enacted by the Republican governor in April, makes anybody convicted of performing an abortion a crime punishable by up to ten years in jail and/or a fine of up to $100,000. The law, which goes into force in late August, has no exceptions for rape or incest.

Truthfully, this is only going to make the right side of the isle look terrible. If we’re going to ban abortion, (which we should) we need to fundamentally restructure the entire system dealing with children in need of care. We’ll likely see heavy backlash about the excessiveness of this bill, and can you blame them? This is a job not even half done; And has likely created several new problems in the state of Oklahoma. We can’t just pull the rug out from our political adversaries; As much as we’d like to we need to work with them.

It’s genuinely disappointing that these politicians race to sign a bill, but won’t consider brainstorming a way to alleviate the pressure on the foster care system or restructure it all together. Nevertheless, this is a win for God and a win for followers of Christ. The safeguarding and praise that these abortion clinics receive from the radical left is inarguably evil, and without regard for human life. These are historic times in our society in which we have to fight on the behalf of those who haven’t even been born yet. Psalm 139:13-16 says: “For you formed my inward parts; you knitted me together in my mother’s womb. I praise you, for I am fearfully and wonderfully made. Wonderful are your works; my soul knows it very well. My frame was not hidden from you, when I was being made in secret, intricately woven in the depths of the earth. Your eyes saw my unformed substance; in your book were written, every one of them, the days that were formed for me, when as yet there was none of them.”

The FDA is absolutely not an integral source of information in terms of our biological well being. They’re proving to be a threat to humanity itself, by enabling people to asphyxiate innocent life without a second thought. There is also something to be said about the concerning mental state of an individual who finds themselves as a pro-choice activist. James 1:27 says this: “Religion that God our Father accepts as pure and faultless is this: to look after orphans and widows in their distress and to keep oneself from being polluted by the world.” Perhaps Pro-choice activists should direct their attention toward the widows and orphans, as opposed to fighting for the right to take human life.
