NPR pours cold water on the ‘Patriot Pence’ theory, however, after ‘an administration official who was not authorized to speak on the record’ said that “The VP intends to follow the law and uphold the Constitution tomorrow,” adding that Pence – a lawyer by training – has prepared for the joint session by meeting with the Senate parliamentarian, and has been reading legal opinions and studying the Constitution.

President Trump has taken to Twitter to express outrage at Vice President Mike Pence, who earlier in the day said he wouldn’t interfere with the results of the 2020 election.
“Mike Pence didn’t have the courage to do what should have been done to protect our Country and our Constitution, giving States a chance to certify a corrected set of facts, not the fraudulent or inaccurate ones which they were asked to previously certify,” Trump tweeted, adding: “USA demands the truth!”
Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-Ky.), in rare agreement with his Democratic counterpart, on Wednesday said Congress cannot change the results of the election, after legislators objected to Arizona’s electoral votes.
“Every election we know features some illegality and irregularity, and of course that’s unacceptable. I support strong state-led voting reforms. Last year’s bizarre pandemic procedures must not become the new norm. But my colleagues, nothing before us proves illegality anywhere near the massive scale that would have tipped the entire election. Nor can public doubt alone justify a radical break when the doubt itself was incited without any evidence,” McConnell said on the Senate floor.
McConnell said he supported President Donald Trump’s legal efforts to challenge election results and noted that some of the judges who ruled against the president were nominated by the Republican himself.
“The Constitution gives us here in congress a limited role. We cannot simply declare ourselves a national board of elections on steroids. The voters, the courts, and the states have all spoken. They’ve all spoken. If we overrule them, it would damage our republic forever,” he added. “The Electoral College margin is almost identical to what it was in 2016. If this election were overturned by mere allegations from the losing side, our democracy would enter a death spiral. We would never see the whole nation accept an election again. Every four years would be a scramble for power at any cost.”
People waving American flags expressing support for President Donald Trump have broken through barriers and overwhelmed Capitol police, crowding inside the Capitol building, where both chambers were deliberating over objections to the electoral votes from the presidential election.
The deliberations have been put on hold and lawmakers have been evacuated. Shots have been reported inside the building, Epoch Times reporter Charlotte Cuthbertson wrote on Twitter. The building was put on lockdown.
Multiple videos from the site showed protesters getting into scuffles with police officers guarding the barrier outside. A mass of people at the tip of a crowd of perhaps 200,000 Trump supporters marching on the Capitol then pushed their way through the barriers and police. Reinforcements were seen rushing in, reportedly shooting teargas into the crowd. The crowd broke into the building and more people gathered at the steps outside.
Videos from inside the building show people traversing the corridors. Tear gas was later seen inside the building.
District of Columbia Mayor Muriel Bowser announced 6 p.m. curfew through 6 a.m. Thursday.
