Edward O’Hara…

I heard a story once about a church in which the elders decided all church employees must be able to read and write. Knowing their janitor had no education, they told him, “We will support you to go back to school.” “I’m a little old for that,” the janitor said and reluctantly gave his notice. With his savings, he opened a little shop. He did well, opened more shops, and soon needed a bank for all his deposits. When the banker found out the man was illiterate, he said, “My goodness man! Do you have any idea where you’d be if you could read and write?!?” “You bet,” the man answered. “I’d be back at the church sweeping out the fellowship hall.”

So what happened to the janitor was actually a blessing in disguise. And just like this janitor who was asked where he would be if he had learned to read and write, when we ask where would we be if Adam had not eaten from the fruit God warned him about, it becomes clear to us that what happened from his eating the fruit has proven itself to be a blessing in disguise.

1 Cor 15:45 Jesus was created Arianism Today (documentary ...

Let’s take a deeper look now at where we would be if Adam had not eaten the fruit so we can see that this really was a blessing in disguise. To do this we will pick this up where Paul teaches about the contrast between Adam and Jesus. The 1st Adam and the last Adam. Paul says in 1Cor.15:45 that the 1st Adam was a living soul quoting from Gen.2:7. He then says in comparison or contrast that the last Adam, Jesus, was made a living spirit.

Now, if as some say Paul was only talking about the body that Adam was made with, but that he was also spiritual when God made him, Paul dispels this myth by saying plainly in vs.46 that Adam was not spiritual but only natural. So here in 1Cor.15:45,46 Paul is referring to all that Adam was when he was made, and all that Jesus was when He was conceived in Mary’s womb. Showing us that Adam was only flesh and blood. Of the earth earthy. A living soul. And that while Jesus had a body that was the same flesh and blood that all men have, and of the earth earthy, a living soul just as all men are as Heb.2:14 testifies to, He is also a spiritual being. This is why Paul refers to Jesus as a “life giving spirit”. While referring to Adam as a living soul which is only natural and not spiritual in any way.

We learn more about this natural man that Paul said the 1st Adam was in 1Cor.2:14. Here he tells us that the natural man can not perceive the things of the spirit. Neither can he know them because they are spiritually understood. Now by putting this information together with what we read in 1Cor.15 we see that Adam was a natural man that could not relate to God spiritually when God placed him in the garden. A man who could never know God in the way Jesus said we must to worship Him in spirit and in truth.

From this we can also see why the Bible says God walked and talked in the garden with Adam. Because unless God met Adam at his natural level Adam could never have walked and talked with God. BecauseAdam only had natural eyes to see with. He only had natural ears to hear with. And the same was true for all of the prophets who came before Jesus. God spoke to them in their natural ears. And showed Himself to their natural eyes. By a cloud by day and a fire by night. Thunderings for some and intelligible words for others. The seas parting. All natural ways that God related to these natural men.

This is also what we see in Heb.6 when it says “For it is impossible for those who were once enlightened, and have tasted of the heavenly gift, and were made partakers of the Holy Ghost,And have tasted the good word of God, and the powers of the world to come,If they shall fall away, to renew them again unto repentance; seeing they crucify to themselves the Son of God afresh, and put him to an open shame.” These are all references to how God showed Himself to natural men. Because He had to show Himself in a way their natural senses could perceive Him because natural men can not perceive the things of the Spirit.

So we must face the fact that if we have believed that Adam was made a spiritual being when God made him we have actually been deceived into rejecting Paul’s gospel. Because in Paul’s gospel Adam was made a natural man. A living soul. Flesh and blood. Nothing else. And in Paul’s gospel if Adam had not eaten from the fruit of the knowledge of good and evil he would still be natural and therefore unable to relate to God on a spiritual level. And in Paul’s and Jesus’ gospel this was never the plan of God that God planned for us from before He made the world. A plan that Peter said in 1Peter1:20 included the death of Jesus. A plan which must have been precipitated by man’s death or there would have been no need for Jesus’ death. A plan in which Jesus said in John4:24 that “those who worship Him must worship Him in spirit and in truth”.

Ten Bible Versus from St. Paul for Singles | Catholic ...

And Paul said in Rom.8:14 “For as many as are led by the Spirit of God, they are the sons of God.” And since Adam was only flesh and blood when he was made, participating in such a relationship with God was an impossibility for Adam. And would also be an impossibility for all men had Adam not eaten from the tree of the knowledge of good and evil.

So where would we all be if Adam had not eaten from the tree of the knowledge of good and evil? Where would we all be without this blessing in disguise that came from Adam eating the fruit God instructed him about? We would be natural men in the garden who could only keep physically alive by eating from the physical tree of life that was in the garden. And we would still be men who would be as unable to relate to God in spirit as the 1st Adam was. Unable to understand the things of the Spirit. Men who would never know the difference between good and evil. And therefore never able to make a responsible free will choice between trusting in the true God or the false god. A choice that must be possible for real love to be possible.

And because God loves with a real love His plan included that we would be able to choose of our own free will whether or not we would love Him. And since Adam ate men have been able to learn to discern between good and evil and to choose between trusting in the true God or the false god. And this is what has made men so that they are without excuse for the choices they make with the God given free will that He has given to all men. And it is because of this that God is just in His judgments of us for the choices we make. Choices that include most importantly whether we will trust in Him. Or in a false god. The choice that is literally between life and death. A real choice with real consequences because God wanted man to choose of his own free will to love Him in return for the love He has shown to us. So that we could willingly enter into a personal and loving relationship with our Creator.

Because of all of this I for one am thankful that Adam ate the fruit. Because God’s plan for mankind included so much more than what Adam had in the garden. His plan was a blessing in disguise. A blessing that is revealed to those who search for Him as for hidden treasure. A blessing that is revealed to those who ask, seek, and knock. A plan for a relationship based on free will, trust, and love.

What is the greatest expression of His love for us? It was in His becoming a man just like us in Jesus Christ. So that He could join with man in our death. So that by His resurrection He could conquer death for all mankind. And if we will respond to His love by trusting in Him we can have the eternal life that Jesus came to provide for us. The eternal life that is assured for us when we are given the first fruits of our salvation which is the spirit. By trusting in Jesus and believing He has raised from the dead. The assurance for us that we will receive the immortal body Jesus told us He has been preparing for us when we shed these bodies for the new one.

Will you trust in Jesus today so you too can have the spirit birthed in you for your assurance of eternal life? So that now you can worship God in spirit and in truth as Jesus said only those who are born of the Spirit can? Jesus said that which is born of the flesh is flesh. And that which is born of the Spirit is spirit. And that you must be born of the Spirit to see the kingdom of God. So this is how we inherit God’s kingdom. Will you trust in Jesus today so you can inherit His kingdom?

If you will then please pray this simple prayer with me. Dear Jesus, thank you for joining with me in my death so that I could join with you in eternal life. Thank you for giving me life so that I will live forever in your kingdom. Help me now to live for you in all that I think and do. Thank you for loving me. In Jesus’ name, Amen.

Praise God if you prayed that prayer with me. The angels are rejoicing. And we are rejoicing with them. Now begin to believe what is plainly written as you read your Bible. And know that everything God does in your life is for your good because He loves you more than our finite brains can comprehend.

See you there or in the air!
