Liang Wudong, a former ENT medic who retired last June jumped back into active duty to treat victims infected with the coronavirus, has died aged 62 on Saturday, January 25, morning.
According to news site China.org, Wudong was with the otolaryngology department that treats conditions in the ear, nose, and throat at Hubei Xinhua Hospital.
He was suspected of contracting the virus on January 16 at the Hubei Provincial Hospital of Integrated Chinese and Western Medicine and was transferred to the Jinyintan Hospital two days later.
According to a Metro report, Wudong had complained of tightening in the chest and was admitted to the hospital. Wuhan Evening Post said there was a thorough checkup conducted that revealed a chest infection and Wudong was immediately put in quarantine.
The site also added that he had a history of heart and coronary heart disease. His mother was intimated about his death by doctors who said that he could not be saved.
According to a report by the Chinese Global Times, another doctor, 51-year-old Jiang Jijun, died of a heart attack later in the day. He had been treating patients in Wuhan as well. It is still unclear if he had contracted the virus.
Meanwhile, there has been a steady stream of tributes pouring in for Doctor Wudong on Twitter with people praising him as a hero and praying for his soul to rest in peace.
One of the tweets read: “God bless this professional fighting from the front, the best leaders are always front and center.”
The virus has killed 41 people in China and infected over 1,300 others so far. According to BBC, the coronavirus causes severe acute respiratory infection with symptoms including fever and cough. There is no specific cure or vaccine for the disease as of now.
Recent updates say France has reported the first confirmed cases in Europe, initially reporting two patients who had visited Wuhan and later announcing a third, who is a relative. Malaysia reported its first confirmed cases of infection as well.

Sure it’s a pandemic in the locked down town it started in. The small locked down town. In the whole of China it is not a pandemic. 8000 cases out of a billion people is not a pandemic, sir. And stop saying killer virus. It is not a killer virus. A killer virus would have a kill ratio WAY above 2%. It’s a chest cold that can cause complications just as the seasonal flu does every year. The elderly and weak immuned are the only at risk people for this. Last year 15,000,000 people in the u.s. had the flu virus. 82,000 of those died. Where were the quarantines? You can believe what you wish. I read the same articles you read about all this. And if you want to freak out yourself and your readers about this KILLER VIRUS that’s your prerogative to do so. I also am a firm believer in being prepared and bet your ass I am. But stop calling a chest cold virus a killer virus. It’s not. We can agree to disagree on this. It’s irrelevant how it spreads. It’s still just a chest cold virus. A flu. And when it’s all said and done and old news I bet that what we’re going to see is that it killed way fewer people than the seasonal flu due to complications. I’m a regular reader of your writings. On Wednesday, the Epoch Times tweeted an interview with a Wuhan citizen, who says people in the outbreak areas “can’t get any medical treatments” nor “a diagnosis” because hospitals are overloaded with patients. He said people “sit and wait to die.”

People people it’s not a killer virus! Stop it already! It’s a chest cold virus! Here’s the math. There’s a billion people in China. That’s billion with a b. 8000 cases roughly of the virus. That’s .0008% of the population. Supposedly 170 have died. That is a 2% kill ratio. THAT IS NOT A KILLER VIRUS NOR A PANDEMIC! Those with very weak immune systems and the elderly are the really the only ones in danger of MAYBE getting complications from this virus. Such as getting pneumonia if you already have bronchitis. Stop with the scare articles and stop freaking out people!
