Psalms 30:5–12, 5 He is only angry for a short time, but his favor lasts forever. It may rain all nite, but in the morning there will be joy.
11 Instead of crying, you made me dance; you took off my sackcloth and put on joy, so my heart can sing to you and not be quiet. I will always be grateful to you, LORD my God.
David wrote this psalm for the dedication of the building, which he knew would happen after he died. He was so eager to finish building a house for God and a permanent place for people to worship Him that he planned everything that could be planned before he died, down to the songs that would be sung. Do we really want the spiritual home of God so much?
David sings this song to tell us that the bad things that happen to us because of God don’t last forever, but God’s favor does. Even if we cry all nite, God makes us happy in the morning. It helps to remember this truth no matter what we are going through. The hard times we go through may seem long, but when we think about eternity and God’s love in our lives, they seem short. Paul the Apostle had a problem that wouldn’t go away for years. He had to rely on God’s grace and power because of it. Taking care of the effects of our sin is not at all the same thing. Living in a fallen world means you have to deal with this.
The crying that we do for God turns into a joyful dance. He takes away our sackcloth of sadness and puts on a robe of happiness for us. Always remember that after every hard time, there will be times of true joy, not just happiness. Why does He help us? So we can sing praises to Him for being good to us and thank Him for the lessons we’ve learned. We thank Him for being with us in that valley of the shadow of death.
Think about this: We will always be grateful to God for blessing us, letting us share in His victory, and giving us His everlasting joy.
I come to You acknowledging that I live in a fallen world. I see the brokenness all around me—the pain, the injustice, the chaos, and the fragility of human life. It is easy to feel overwhelmed by the darkness and to wonder why there is so much suffering in a world You created to be good.
When the weight of this fallen world presses down on me, remind me that I am not a citizen of this earth alone, but a citizen of Your eternal kingdom. Help me to not lose heart or become cynical, but to instead be a light in the darkness. Where there is hatred, let me bring love; where there is despair, let me bring hope; and where there is brokenness, let me be an instrument of Your healing.
Give me the strength to endure the trials of this life without losing my faith. Protect my heart from bitterness and my mind from fear. Help me to trust that even in the midst of the fall, You are working a plan of redemption, and that one day You will make all things new.
Until that day, keep me close to You. May Your grace be my shield and Your truth be my anchor, so that I may walk through this broken world with steady feet and a hopeful spirit. Amen.
