Elisha succeeded Elijah as the prophet. The king of Moab rebelled against Israel and refused to pay tribute, so Joram, the king of Israel, sought assistance from Jehoshaphat, the king of Judah, and Edom. They attempted a covert strike through the desert, but ran out of water. Jehoshaphat advised consulting a God-ordained prophet, and Elisha was summoned.
Elisha advised Joram to seek about his parents’ gods. He did ask of God because he respected the presence of the king of Judah. It’s amazing to see how he went about hearing from God. The idea is frequently repeated throughout the Old Testament. He asked for a harpist. Remember how David’s singing set Saul free from the oppressive spirit that was bothering him. David had appointed instrumentalists to perform in the temple. It appears that Elisha required music to calm his spirit so that he might hear from God.
The gift of music is a spiritual tool. It has the ability to pull us closer to God while also calming our spirits. We should be cautious with the music we listen to. When you need to hear the Spirit’s voice directing you, consider listening to anything written in praise of God. He takes up the praises of His people.
Music written to glorify man or the world might have the opposite effect on us. It has the ability to move our bodies in the direction suggested by the words. We seem to be constantly flooded by “popular” music wherever we go. Most of it encourages illicit partnerships. Choose your music intelligently, and have a solid library of music written for God’s praise and glory.
Consider this: When you are distressed, tune everything else out and sing a song of praise to the Lord. You will discover that the Lord provides solutions to your problems, just as He did for Elisha.
