Because only by new birth, a spiritual birth, is man-made ready to inhabit the kingdom of God. Because the kingdom of God is a spiritual kingdom, not a natural one inhabited by natural beings like the one we live in now. So only what is spiritual can live there.  All men and the natural world men live in are natural, not spiritual. I mean, it still works no matter who does them, right? And what is it about salvation by works anyway that is so ingrained in so many people that they just can’t see works not being involved in some way in salvation?
