The Biden administration has come under fire for terminating the China Initiative, a contentious Justice Department program aimed at combatting Chinese Communist Party espionage (CCP). In a March 8 letter to U.S. Attorney General Merrick Garland acquired by the Epoch Times, Missouri Attorney General Eric Schmitt chastised the administration for stopping the project “because to concerns over the perception of prejudice.” Schmitt remarked, “I am perplexed by the Department of Justice’s recent decision to end the successful ‘China Initiative’ approach.” “This strategy considered a number of foreign actors’ risks to the United States and prudently chose the communist regime of the People’s Republic of China (PRC) as the most pressing.” Following concerns that ethnic Chinese academics were being unfairly targeted, the DOJ ended the initiative last month.
