THE CANA MIRACLE… AND PASSOVER? AND JESUS IS STILL CHANGING WATER TO WINE!- John2
You might be wondering why I am talking about this miracle at Cana during the time we commemorate Passover. It’s because this miracle was so much more special than any of the other ones Jesus did. The symbolism of the events tells the entire story of the born again experience we all must have to enter God’s kingdom. That is the whole reason why Jesus came.
So let’s get right to it as we thank our Lord and savior for the greatest gift ever given. The water the servants poured into the stone water pots represents the word. The wine the water was changed into represents the spirit. So that we understand that when we are filled with God’s word this is when a man can be born again. Born of the Spirit and made a spiritual being. The water made wine.
The water that is the word is also Jesus as we are told in John1:1 “In the beginning…” The wine is the Spirit. Jesus is the administrator of the Old Covenant. Which is why He said He came only for the lost sheep of thew house of Israel. The Holy Spirit is the administrator of the New Covenant as we see in John16:7-11. So when we are born again we are led by the Spirit of God. And not by the law Jesus gave solely to Israel in the OT. To preserve their bloodline for Jesus to come through.
This is why in John16 we see Jesus telling His disciples that He has to go away. And that if He does not go away the Holy Spirit can not come. He had to go away because He knew that the Holy Spirit is the administrator of the New Covenant. Not Him. Because Jesus is the administrator of the Old Covenant. And as it’s administrator it was He who actually met Moses on Mt. Sinai to give him the 10 commandments.
Again this is why Jesus said in Mt.15:24 that He came only for the lost sheep of the house of Israel. When He confirmed the covenant with them and they rejected and had Him killed. His administration(dispensation) for the time had come to a close. And another administration(dispensation) began. That of the Holy Spirit indwelling those who believe in Jesus. What Paul refers to in 2Thes.2:6-10 as the restrainer that must be removed before the antichrist comes on the scene.
This is what Paul is referring to in Eph.3:1-7 when he speaks about the dispensation of the grace of God. It’s the time we are now in when the Holy Spirit indwells believers and it is He that leads and guides us in all truth. And what John was referring to in 1John2:27 when he wrote that we have no need that anyone teach us. Because in this dispensation unlike any other we have the Holy Spirit doing that.
This means that when we see in Rev.2,3 Jesus again teaching the churches, that the dispensation of grace has come to a close. When Jesus begins His administration again to bring to a close the 70 weeks prophecy of Daniel. Returning the world to the dispensation of law that Israel’s betrayal of Jesus at Golgotha stopped in the middle of the 70th week 2,000 years ago.
As an aside I want to address something that has recently come to my attention. There are those who teach that Jesus’ ministry began at the end of 62 weeks because they read Dan.9:26 to mean this. But, what they are missing is where in vs.25 there are 7 weeks of years preceding the 62 weeks. And what Daniel does in vs.26 is presupposes the 7 weeks before the 62 weeks he speaks of in vs.26 without saying it again.
So please realize that Jesus was cut off in the middle of the 70th week. Not during the 62nd week. Because the 62 weeks mentioned in Dan.9:26 are preceded by 7 weeks whether the 7 weeks are restated again or not. The 7 weeks come before the 62.
With that said, returning to the marriage feast where Jesus performed His first miracle. The 6 stone or earthen water pots represent man because he was made on day 6 of creation. And because those pots were earthen vessels. Just like our bodies are earthen vessels. Made from the dust of the ground as God says in Gen.2:7 and 3:19. When our earthen vessels are filled with the word we are ready to choose to be born of the Spirit. This is the symbolism of the water turned to wine.
Another part of the symbolism is when the servants who drew the water made wine knew where it came from. And noone else did. In John3 when He was telling Nicodemus why he needed to be born again Jesus said only those who are of the Spirit know where the spirit comes from.
And in 1Cor.2:14 Paul said the natural man perceives not the things of the Spirit of God. Only those who are spiritual do. The servants are representative of men who have a spirit created in them by God. Men who are made spiritual by the water turned to wine.
Because they knew where the water made wine came from. And have the Holy Spirit indwelling them to teach their spirit as Paul says in Rom.8:16,17.
“16 The Spirit itself beareth witness with our spirit, that we are the children of God:
17 And if children, then heirs; heirs of God, and joint-heirs with Christ; if so be that we suffer with him, that we may be also glorified together.”
The marriage happened also on the 3rd day. And it was the 3rd day that Jesus rose from the grave. When He rose the 3rd day and went to the Father the New Covenant began.
The point is that in this first of Jesus’ miracles in which John says “11 This beginning of miracles did Jesus in Cana of Galilee, and manifested forth his glory; and his disciples believed on him.” That it is in this miracle we have laid out for us the reason Jesus came. And the reason He died. And the reason He rose. And the reason He lives. In short, the message of the gospel.
Jesus came to join with man in our mortality. To do this He had to be the same flesh all men have. So that He could be tempted in all points just as we are, yet without sin. Points that also effectively reject the sin nature doctrine as well.
Which is that Jesus came to make natural men into spirits. To do this Jesus lived as a man so that He could suffer as a man all the things men suffer. So that as Heb.2:17,18 says, “that he might be a merciful and faithful high priest in things pertaining to God, to make reconciliation for the sins of the people.
18 For in that he himself hath suffered being tempted, he is able to succour them that are tempted.”
Jesus died to fulfill the requirements of the law as it’s final and once for all sacrifice for sins under the law. Saying on the cross as He died, “It is finished”. making the way for Israel to be delivered from the law when they turn from the law to trust in Jesus. Into a New Covenant, that is now made available to all mankind by the preaching of the cross, wherein is the promise of eternal life.
And as Heb.7:23-25 says Jesus lives as an intercession for all who will trust in Him. “23 And they truly were many priests, because they were not suffered to continue by reason of death:
24 But this man, because he continueth ever, hath an unchangeable priesthood.
25 Wherefore he is able also to save them to the uttermost that come unto God by him, seeing he ever liveth to make intercession for them.”
And because He is our intercession our faith in Him makes our righteousness the same as Jesus’ righteousness. Because we trust in Him as He trusted the Father. This is the righteousness of faith Paul speaks of in Rom.3:21,22.
When we do this the miracle Jesus performed at the marriage at Cana shows us the word we are filled with, and the wine it turns into, is the spirit God creates in us when we believe in Jesus. And the Holy Spirit who comes to dwell in us at the same time. Who seals us to God “unto the day of redemption”. Eph.4:30
We become as the servants who drew the water that knew from where the wine had come. And we share this when we share the gospel in our ministry of reconciliation with those who as yet do not know from whence the wine has come as we do because we are God’s children.
Made God’s children when the word(water) we have heard through the preaching of God’s servants is made by God into spirit(wine) in us when we trust in Jesus and His resurrection.
We preach about the miracle of the wedding on the 3rd day when we are joined by faith to Jesus. Made possible when Jesus rose from the grave to break death’s power over us. So that we will have eternal life now. And immortality at the resurrection.
This is the power of Passover. This is the message God was giving to us by example when He caused the death angel to pass over all the houses in Egypt that had the blood of the lamb on their doorposts.
Because as Heb.2:14 says we who have believed in Jesus need no longer live in the fear of death. Though these earthly vessels will be put off. We have one not made with hands we will dwell in throughout eternity guaranteed to us who have believed in Jesus and His resurrection because of Passover.
In Rom.10:9,10 Paul says that when we confess with our mouth the Lord Jesus. And believe in our heart that God has raised him from the dead. We shall be saved. Because it is then that we will become the servants who drew the water(God’s word in us) who know that Jesus makes it wine(our God created spirit).
If you will do this the miracle of the marriage at Cana, the first miracle Jesus performed that “manifested forth His glory”, through also the miracle of Passover, will be made a reality for and in you. If you will do this you will be made a child of God and heir to His kingdom. If you will do this then eternal life will be yours now. And immortality at the resurrection from the dead. If you will do this… I will see you there or in the air!
