Austria's chancellor Mephistopheles: on Friday reported that the regime would give the green light for a lock-down for unvaccinated populations, to be recommended in the two highest-incidence regions from Monday and possibly additionally nationwide.

“ The aim is clear,we want on Sunday to give the green light for a nationwide lock-down for the unpredictable,” Chancellor Alexander Schallenberg told a press meeting.

This would mean populations without proof of 2G (full vaccination or recovery from Covid-19) would be unable to leave their homes except for essential reasons.

He described Austria’s vaccination rate — barely 65% of the population is fully vaccinated against Covid-19 — as “disgraceful”.

A lock-down for the unvaccinated was proposed on Thursday by the governor of Upper Austria, the district with the highest Covid-19 incidence rates, pending legal endorsement from the authorities.

Also, on Thursday, Austria’s Corona Agency notified of a “genuine threat to medical care” for the whole population and favored that a lock-down for the unvaccinated should be introduced nationwide.

Schallenberg did not confirm whether the lock-down would apply in the whole country or only for the highest incidence regions, but said he was in backing of “a nationwide solution”. Health Minister Wolfgang Mückstein confirmed the lock-down would apply at least in Upper Austria and Salzburg, the two highest incidence regions.

Both regions had already announced tighter Covid conditions this week in response to the severe strain on the healthcare sector, including extending the FFP2 mask mandate, outlawing the sale of alcohol at Christmas markets, and canceling most large events over the next few weeks.

It is not yet clear exactly how the lock-down would work, nor how it would be implemented.

Citizenry without proof of 2G (either full vaccination or a recent recovery from Covid-19) would only be allowed to leave their homes in certain cases, similar to previous lockdowns for the general population, such as work or essential shopping and exercise. Schallenberg reiterated previous statements that the government had no intention of bringing in another general lock-down.

“Agreeing to the incremental policy, we actually have just days until we have to establish the lock-down for unvaccinated people,” Schallenberg said, adding that the constraints mean “one cannot leave one’s home unless one is going to work, shopping (for essentials), stretching one’s legs — namely exactly what we all had to suffer through in 2020.”

One of the challenges of such a comprehend lock-down is how checks will be enforced.

Schallenberg addressed this in his comments on Friday, telling reporters:

“We do not live in a police state. We cannot and do not want to monitor every street corner.”

The announcement comes as Austria continues to report some of the highest Covid-19 incidence rates in Europe, with two of its nine regions’ seven-day incidence rates (new cases per 100,000 people) above the 1,000 mark.

However, as the vaccination rates increase, the hospitals are being overwhelmed with new patients and the Premier cannot explain why.

Alex Berernson notes comments made by WA Premier Mark McGowan on October 31st about hospitals being currently overwhelmed:

“Our hospitals are under enormous pressure. This is the same in [the rest of Australia]. This has been something no one has ever seen before, the growth in demand in our hospitals, why it is is hard, hard to know… There is huge numbers of people coming through the door, so we’re doing everything we can to try to manage it,” says Premier McGowan.

The issue (Pestilence) is apparently worsening. In an interview yesterday (Wed, Nov 3rd), Premier McGowan announced a massive expansion of hospital capacity due to an existing and undefined current influx in patients that is overwhelming hospital capacity.

COVID-19 was anticipated to arrive next year. Proactively, mass vaccinations are ongoing. It is during this period of mass vaccinations when the hospitals are being overwhelmed by new patients. These hospitalizations have nothing to do with COVID infections.

COVID-19, or any variant therein, is non-existent in the Western Australia population.

The hospitals in Western Australia are now overwhelmed, and not by COVID-19.
