Secretary of State Nominee, Rex Tillerson Rejects the Obama Administration’s Shaky Globalism

After enduring the Obama’s Administration’s willingness to lead from behind over the past eight years, and after suffering from the Administration’s shameful incompetence in dealing with global threats, it is heartening to observe that the incoming Trump Administration has served notice that it is prepared to take threats to the safety and security of the United States seriously.

Recent history demonstrates that seriousness has been unfamiliar to the current Administration. Instead, the Obama Administration has offered a series of spineless responses to wide-ranging threats.

Recall the Administration’s refusal to counter the alleged Chinese cyber attack on the federal government, which exposed 22 million American’s personnel records to outsiders. Consider President Obama’s failure to take action against Russia until after former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton confounded his expectation by losing the election. Witness the fact that ISIS (the Islamic State) has expanded its operations and launched more than 143 attacks in more than 28 nations under the Administration’s less than watchful gaze.

Rather than respond forcefully to such risks, President Obama has become captive to outbursts of self-congratulations. Rather than acknowledge that ISIS arose on his watch or Russian power and influence have expanded in Crimea, Syria, and the world, President Obama takes credit for arranging an Iranian nuclear weapons deal that allows the leading state sponsor of terror to receive tens of billions of dollars. President Obama also congratulates himself for orchestrating a rapprochement with Cuba, one of the world’s leading human rights abusers, and leading a coalition of nations that allegedly imperils ISIS.

Taken together, this is simply a self-congratulatory charade masquerading as sound policy analysis.

In stark contrast with this charade, Secretary of State nominee, Rex Tillerson has indicated that the incoming Trump Administration is prepared to place the interests of the American people first. In addition, the Trump Administration is primed to reject President Obama’s blindness regarding the threats posed by our adversaries, including radical Islamic terrorists, Russia and China.

President Obama’s exceedingly feeble approach to the global terrorism was on full display during his farewell address this week.

President Obama stated that “no foreign terrorist organization has successfully planned and executed an attack on our homeland these past eight years.”  Such claims conveniently ignore the Obama Administration’s persistent misrepresentation of the Fort Hood terror attack as “workplace violence” for six years while downplaying ties to international terror organizations.

Similarly, the Obama Administration resisted pinning the San Bernardino terror attack on foreign influence despite evidence from one of the killer’s social media account indicating she supported jihad and hated the United States before she entered the States. In other words, this was not simply unprovoked gun violence. Instead, it was a deliberate attack on American citizens prompted by a terrorist’s stated allegiance to the interest of foreign terrorists.

Consistent with the Administration’s policy of ignoring the nature of the enemy we face, Attorney General Lynch responded to Omar Mateen’s bloody attack on an Orlando nightclub last summer by suggesting we should fight radical Islamic terror with love and compassion.

During his confirmation hearing, Secretary of State designee Tillerson, rather than offering love and compassion, offered a clear-eyed assessment of the threats we face:

We face considerable threats in this evolving new environment. China has emerged as an economic power in global trade, and our interactions have been both friendly and adversarial. While Russia seeks respect and relevance on the global stage, its recent activities have disregarded American interests. Radical Islam is not a new ideology, but it is a hateful and deadly, and illegitimate expression of the Islamic faith. Adversaries like Iran and North Korea pose grave threats to the world because of their refusal to conform to international norms.

Rex Tillerson’s statement about the facts on the ground signifies that President Obama is a talented fiction writer who possesses a shaky understanding of the world. All Americans who are prepared to place the interest of the United States ahead of foreign interests and powers are compelled to agree.

Secretary of State Nominee Tillerson has issued a clarion call signaling that the time for self-congratulations, which are richly fused with fabrication that severely sabotages the defense of the homeland, is over. The time for action is now.
