The Euphrates River’s water level is dropping quickly and has hit an all-time low. People are worried that this terrible drought could be the start of the end times predicted in the Bible.
The Center for Strategic & International Studies (CSIS) says that the Euphrates’ water level has now reached one of its lowest places ever.
As the river continues to dry up, there is a discussion online about whether this means the end of the world, as the book of Revelation says, or is just more proof of so-called “climate change.”
I don’t necessarily disagree with the idea of climate change, but I don’t think that people are changing the climate, at least not in a big way. Before greenhouse gas pollution came into play, the climate has always been changing. This has been known since the beginning of time.
Here is a piece from the Daily Star newspaper in the UK:
The Euphrates, which runs through Turkey, Syria, and Iraq and is the longest river in Western Asia, is getting smaller. It cuts through the Fertile Crescent, which is one of the most important places in the Bible. The river is very important in the Book of Revelation, and an online prophesy about it has caused a lot of worry because it talks about the end of the world and Christ’s return.
“The sixth angel poured out his bowl on the great river Euphrates, and its water dried up to make way for the kings from the East,” says Revelation 16:12. A lot of people think this is a sign that when the Euphrates river runs out, a huge army from the east will cross it on its way to the Battle of Armageddon. This verse is the second time in the Bible that the Euphrates is said to dry up. The first time was in Jeremiah 50:38, when God said, “A drought on her waters!” They are going to dry out. Because it’s a land full of idols, and those gods will go crazy with fear.
What does the Bible mean by “second prophecy”? The second promise in Revelation, which is part of the seven bowl judgments that mark the end of the seven-year tribulation, is so terrible that “no one would be saved.” According to the Express, the rising water level has made end-times believers even more uneasy. Many of them are sure that an old promise is coming true right in front of their eyes.
The Tigris and Euphrates river basins, which are home to Babylon, lost an amazing 117 million acre feet (34 cubic miles) of freshwater from 2003 to 2009. This was found in a 2013 NASA study. This amount of water loss is about the same as the Dead Sea’s, and most of it (60%) comes from groundwater being taken out of underground tanks.
In the past, these two powerful rivers helped farming communities grow. But now, as the problem gets worse, they are slowly drying up. If you strongly believe in Bible prophecy about the end times, this could mean that the prophecy comes true within the next few decades.
The Ministry of Water Resources in Iraq has warned that if nothing is done right away, the Euphrates River could dry up totally by 2040. Droughts caused by climate change will make the water levels drop even more.
What danger does the Euphrates pose to people?
Water quality and water levels are getting worse, which is causing a lot of other problems, like famine and disease.
Because of the lack of water, diseases like diarrhea, chicken pox, measles, typhoid fever, and cholera are spreading across Iraq right now.
