Brits have been warned that the variant might "potentially cause a big wave" because the UK is "worryingly" unprepared for such an event.

Scientists have speculated that Brits would once more need to wear masks as a new form of Covid-19 is being reported in several nations. The virus, known as BA.X, has been discovered in Denmark and Israel by internet virus trackers, albeit this has not yet been independently validated.

Ryan Hisner, an online Covid variation tracker, tweeted that the strain was "the real deal" and brought attention to it.The new variety is distinct from EG.5.1, which the World Health Organization (WHO) recently classified as a "variant of interest" after discovering it in 51 nations.According to Canadian evolutionary biologist T. Ryan Gregory, the variant has been given the name "BA.X" until it is known where it originated.

The strain, he cautioned, "may not be able to compete with currently dominant variants and may not take off" because there have only been a few sequences of it to yet. However, it's intriguing and even worrisome.

The fact that BA.X had been discovered in numerous nations, he continued, was "concerning" because it was "clearly not restricted to one region" and might yet be "going undetected in some countries."

The severity of the BA.X infection is not yet known, but given that it may be related to the Omicron variation, immunizations may be beneficial in protecting against it.

According to Professor Stephen Griffin of the University of Leeds' department of infectious diseases, the variant "represents a far greater change in the genetic makeup of the virus" and is "reminiscent of the first emergence" of Omicron in late 2021.

It is still too early to say if this "jump" in evolution will produce a virus "fit" enough to rule in the same way that BA.1 and BA.2 and other varieties of concern formerly did, but there are a few mutations that could be problematic if it does begin to spread, the author continued.
