Since millions of genetically modified mosquitoes were released into the environment by the United Nations World Mosquito Program, which is funded by Bill Gates, the virus has been spreading quickly.

The World Mosquito Program of the UN declared in 2023 that billions of mosquitoes with altered DNA would be released in Brazil during a ten-year period.
