According to Bloomberg, automakers are learning that rigorous battery production conditions imposed by the United States and its allies may make them less cost-effective than global competitors, a year and a half after the Inflation Reduction Act passed.

This could jeopardize Biden's goal of strengthening domestic electric vehicle sales. According to Bloomberg, mining businesses and labor groups contend that the United States cannot create a competitive EV industry unless it reduces its imports of cheaper Chinese-subsidized minerals.

At the same time, higher prices are preventing automakers from producing EVs. By 2027, battery material requirements will treble, making Biden's ambitious EV vision more difficult to realize.

Ford and General Motors will lower their EV investment. After announcing better-than-expected earnings this month, General Motors revealed plans to sell more hybrid vehicles and fewer electric vehicles.

On the earnings call, CEO Mary Barra stated, "Let me be clear: GM remains committed to eliminating tailpipe emissions from our light-duty vehicles by 2035, but, in the meantime, deploying plug-in technology in strategic segments will deliver some of the environmental benefits of EVs as the nation continues to build this charging

Based on Consumer Reports research from last year, electric vehicles have over 80% more problems and are less reliable than automobiles with internal combustion engines.
