The House’s top Republican sought to distance himself from his predecessor, Rep. Nancy Pelosi (R-Calif.), who acted unilaterally during the two impeachment hearings against former President Donald J. Trump, blaming the American people for his lack of decisive action.

“Impeachment is a serious matter, and House Republicans would not take it lightly or for political purposes.””The American people deserve to have their voices heard on this issue through their elected representatives,” the speaker said in an interview with the conservative news site Breitbart News.

“That is why, if we proceed with an impeachment inquiry, it will be through a vote on the floor of the People’s House, not through a declaration by one person,” he explained.

With McCarthy’s declaration, the possibility of holding the very corrupt leader accountable is dependent on his possessing the required leadership characteristics to pull it off, given Republicans’ razor-thin majority in the chamber. Moreover, unlike Pelosi, he has not demonstrated the ability to impose lockstep discipline on Democrats, some of whom are skeptical of such a move during an election year.

“There is no evidence that Joe Biden received money or agreed to do something so that Hunter could receive money.” Simply put, there is no evidence of this. They can’t impeach without such evidence. And I don’t believe there is any proof,” an unidentified Republican lawmaker recently told CNN.

“Leadership recognizes that the entire House Republican conference has not yet been sold on the politically risky idea of impeachment,” CNN reported.
“I don’t believe that a vote of the House is required to open an impeachment inquiry,” Rep. Matt Gaetz (R-Fla.), a critic of Speaker McCarthy, said.

Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene (R-GA) has threatened to vote to shut down the government if McCarthy is not impeached.

“I’ve already decided that I will not vote to fund the government unless we have passed an impeachment inquiry into Joe Biden,” the outspoken lawmaker said during a town hall gathering in her Georgia district on Thursday.

“One of the House’s most powerful members, Marjorie Taylor Greene, just admitted that the House Republican impeachment is only a partisan stunt driven by the most extreme, far-right members,” said White House spokeswoman Ian Sams.

“If Speaker McCarthy proceeds with impeachment simply to throw red meat to the right wing as a condition for or distraction from far-right GOP efforts to shut down the government, it will prove once and for all that this is a baseless, politically motivated exercise that is not rooted in evidence and is not about getting to the truth,” Sams added.
