The king of Babylon had a troubling dream. Knowing his magicians often deceived him, he asked them to tell him what he dreamed instead of asking for an interpretation. Only Daniel could do this because God revealed the dream to him. The dream showed a large image of a man, symbolizing all human governments until God’s kingdom would come and rule the earth (Daniel 2:44-45).
Patriotism can be both positive and negative. Some governments may be righteous for a while, but none remain so forever. Power often leads to corruption. Nebuchadnezzar recognized that Daniel’s God was supreme but then built a statue of himself and demanded worship (Daniel 2:47; 3:5). Even attempts to create a theocracy fail because humans are involved.
Daniel stated that God appoints and removes kings (Daniel 2:21). God is in control, even as He allows us to make our own choices. A nation may seek God temporarily, but history shows they will eventually stray. Trusting in human governments is like relying on the image of a man that will ultimately fall. True justice and righteousness come from beyond human power. Only when the King of kings rules will there be peace and justice for everyone. He is our only hope for governance. Come, Lord Jesus!
Remember: This dream’s message should guide where we focus our lives.
