According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, the condition is caused by a bacteria called "mycoplasma pneumoniae" and normally results in minor respiratory infections, though it can escalate to a serious lung infection that requires hospitalization.

Mycoplasma pneumonia is often known as "white lung pneumonia" because of the white patches that appear on X-rays caused by the condition.

According to a statement released Thursday by the Warren County Health District in Ohio, a pneumonia outbreak that began in August has infected at least 145 children aged three to fourteen.

The WCHD said in a second statement released Wednesday that "Mycoplasma pneumoniae," "streptococcus pneumoniae," and adenovirus were among the specimens at fault, all of which cause pneumonia and other respiratory ailments.

The WCHD claimed that the increase in pneumonia cases is not due to a "new or novel" respiratory ailment, but rather a surge in regular pediatric cases, and that the epidemic is unrelated to any other statewide, national, or worldwide outbreaks.

Massachusetts is also reporting an increase in kid "walking pneumonia" cases—mild pneumonia infections caused by "mycoplasma pneumoniae"—as well as an increase in other respiratory ailments such as respiratory syncytial virus.
