According to a press release from the International Alliance Defending Freedom International (ADFI), the final arguments in prosecutors' second attempt to sue two Christians for their beliefs following Finland's recent admission to the Northern Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO) were heard by the country's Court of Appeals.

The announcement, the Helsinki District Court had previously acquitted Finnish Minister of the Interior Paivi Rasanen and Finnish Bishop Juhana Pohjola of all criminal charges stemming from their Christian beliefs in April 2022. However, the prosecutors had challenged the verdict. After Russia's invasion of Ukraine in February 2022, the country was accepted into NATO, making it the 31st member of the alliance.

On Friday, the prosecution maintained that "the point isn't whether it's true or not but that it is insulting," as reported by ADFI. To paraphrase Räsänen: "You can cite the Bible, but it is Räsänen's interpretation and opinion about the Bible verses that are criminal."

In 2004, Rasanen and Pohjola published a brochure on the definition of marriage in the Bible. The prosecution filed charges against them as a result. They filed accusations because of a Twitter post in which Rasanen displayed a Bible text and quoted from a 2019 radio debate about Christianity.

The prosecution also claimed that Rasanen's Twitter tweet of a Bible verse encouraged prejudice. Anybody can hold any opinion they want. "Speaking in a discriminatory manner is not protected by law," Anu Mantila, the prosecutor in the case, told CNE.

Paul Coleman, executive director of ADFI, told the Daily Caller News Foundation, "Dragging an individual through a grueling criminal trial simply for expressing their religious beliefs is not a marker of democracy or 'progress.'"
