Solomon started his reign with a passion for God. After presenting a thousand sacrifices on Gibeon’s high place, the LORD appeared to Solomon in a dream and promised him whatever he asked.
Solomon desired a discerning heart and knowledge to rule God’s people above everything else. He acknowledged his need for discernment. This pleased the heart of God. He was then told that he would receive the things that men generally desire: riches, long life, and the death of his adversaries.
Seek first the kingdom of God and His righteousness, and all these things will be added to you. Isn’t attaining the kingdom about doing what’s best for the people who live there? Solomon was thinking about others, not himself. Unfortunately, his heart did not remain in this condition, but it was genuine at the moment.
We have both a good example of seeking the best for God’s people and a warning to avoid focusing our emphasis on satisfying ourselves. If you seek the good of others, God will make sure you are taken care of, and you will be storing treasures in heaven.
Consider what you would ask God.
1 Kings 3:5,9 5At Gibeon the LORD appeared to Solomon during the night in a dream, and God said, “Ask for whatever you want me to give you.” 9So give your servant a discerning heart to govern your people and to distinguish between right and wrong. For who is able to govern this great people of yours?”
