Collins and Anthony Fauci, really produced a mutant strain of H5N1 more than ten years ago that “had gained the ability to spread through the air between ferrets.” Two research teams, one in Wisconsin under the guidance of virologist Yoshihiro Kawaoka and another in the Netherlands under the direction of virologist Ron Fouchier, discovered in late 2011 that they may have pushed the virus in that direction.
