Gain of function studies, supported by Drs. Francis S. Collins and Anthony Fauci, really produced a mutant strain of H5N1 more than ten years ago that “had gained the ability to spread through the air between ferrets.”
Two research teams, one in Wisconsin under the guidance of virologist Yoshihiro Kawaoka and another in the Netherlands under the direction of virologist Ron Fouchier, discovered in late 2011 that they may have pushed the virus in that direction. The H5N1 viruses produced in each of these facilities were able to transmit via the air between ferrets, which are used as an animal model to examine the potential human behavior of flu viruses.
The primary goal of this research was to help prevent pandemics in the future, and two of the most eminent scientists in the United States, Drs. Francis S. Collins, director of the National Institutes of Health, and Anthony Fauci, director of the NIH’s National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases, provided funding.
The study specifically selected ferrets due to their striking resemblance to the human respiratory system.
We are considerably more capable of producing dangerous diseases than we are of controlling them, and once something breaks out, it may quickly spread over the world.
It’s only a matter of time until our world is further devastated by massive pestilence.
