Our Bodies Are the Temples of the Lord

When Solomon finished building the temple David had planned, the priests exited the Holy Place (the temple’s inner room). Then a cloud filled the LORD’s temple. The Hebrews equated clouds with the splendor of God. Their forefathers had witnessed the cloud on Sinai when Moses met with God. The LORD’s brightness filled the temple to the point where the priests were unable to perform their appointed responsibilities.

Our bodies serve as the Lord’s temple. Jesus replied, “Destroy this temple (meaning his body) and in three days I will raise it up.” His body was so full of God’s beauty that He only did what the Father showed Him. Jesus did not have a stand-alone ministry. He was a willing instrument for the glory of His Father. He always surrendered Himself to the Father, and thus “we have seen his glory, the glory of the One and Only, who came from the Father, full of grace and truth.” John 1:14 His power came from the Father’s glory.

We are frequently taken away by our mission and caught up in what must be done. If we are not cautious and focused, we may wind ourselves ministering from the incorrect source. The brightness must fill our temple, our earthly body. There is no room for us to get in the way and muck things up. The glory must fill us so that He is the source of our activity and we are simply vessels for His glory.

Consider the source of your action. Is your temple overflowing with God’s glory?

1 Kings 8:10-11 10When the priests withdrew from the Holy Place, the cloud filled the temple of the LORD. 11And the priests could not perform their service because of the cloud, for the glory of the LORD filled his temple.
