As Shanghai residents struggle with food and medicine shortages, and workers (both blue-collar factory workers and highly compensated bankers and traders) are forced to bed down at work for what could be a lengthy stay, local authorities have provided the first indication that the staggered Shanghai lockdown may last longer than the initial 9-day period.

According to Reuters, local officials have started closing down certain western areas of Shanghai two days ahead of schedule, as the number of new cases found in China's most populated metropolis surged by one-third despite strict precautions already in place to attempt to halt the virus's spread. The city is just on its third day under lockdown.

While inhabitants in the city's east have been locked down since Monday, those in the city's west were supposed to begin their four-day lockdown on Friday. They are now being urged to brace themselves for an imminent lockdown.

Several residents in the western districts were informed on Tuesday by their housing committees that they would be barred from leaving their compounds for the next seven days.

"We will resume regular life shortly, but in the meanwhile, we encourage everyone to stick rigorously to pandemic control measures, do not congregate, and restrict movements," according to one housing committee message seen by Reuters.

Meanwhile, the city's southwestern district of Minhang, which has a population of over 2.5 million people, has announced that public bus services would be suspended until April 5.

Locking down Shanghai is largely anticipated to have a negative effect on China's economic development. According to economists at the Chinese University of Hong Kong, full-scale lockdown of Shanghai might result in a 4% drop in national real GDP, as calculated by economists at the Chinese University of Hong Kong, Tsinghua University, and other institutions in mid-March.

Shanghai recorded a record 5,656 asymptomatic COVID cases and 326 symptomatic cases on Wednesday, up from 4,381 new asymptomatic cases and 96 symptomatic instances the day before.

Shanghai officials said on Wednesday that they had performed 9.1 million nucleic acid tests. They also said that they intended to disinfect office buildings, construction sites, wet markets, and schools over the course of a month in order to eradicate the infection.

China's "dynamic clearing" strategy implies that it wants to clear all cases, and everyone who tests positive is transported to central quarantine facilities or hospitals. Close contacts and neighbors are required to quarantine at home.
