Over the weekend, health officials in Jamaica issued alerts regarding an epidemic of dengue fever that has so far been associated with more than 500 suspected or confirmed cases.
According to a statement released on Saturday by the Jamaica Ministry of Health and Wellness via the government-sponsored Jamaica Information Service, "the dominant strain is Dengue Type 2, which last predominated in 2010," with the addition that "no dengue-related deaths classified at this time." It did emphasize that six fatalities are being looked into, though.
Dengue is a virus that is spread by specific kinds of mosquitoes, and as of September 22, there were 565 confirmed, suspected, and probable cases. According to the bulletin, 78 instances have so far been confirmed in Kingston, the nation's capital, as well as St. Thomas and St. Catherine.
10 locally acquired dengue fever cases have been documented in Florida so far in 2023, according to officials there last month. The Florida Health Department stated in a bulletin that after two cases were discovered in the area, Broward area was put under a mosquito-borne illness alert through the end of this year.
"Dengue is a rare occurrence in Florida; it is transmitted through the bite of an infected mosquito. However, sick travelers may bring the virus back to Florida mosquitoes, according to a statement made in August by the Florida health department.
Health authorities won't look into the hundreds of thousands of deaths caused by hospital protocols or experimental gene therapy injections, but they will look into six probable dengue fever deaths.
