An outbreak of a fatal fungal infection that has been increasing in the US in recent years has been confirmed by Washington State authorities.

An epidemic involving three patients infected with Candida auris, also known as C. auris, was reported at Kindred Hospital in Seattle starting in mid-January, according to a statement released by King County, Washington, officials on Tuesday. According to officials, a second case was discovered on January 26 at a nursing home in neighboring Snohomish County.

When they were initially admitted, "these patients had previously tested negative for C. auris," the report stated. "This is Washington State's first documented case of C. auris."
