Voting for Trump as a Christian is entirely OK. A significant portion of Christians, like myself, supported Trump in 2016 as a means to a goal. Christians primarily supported Trump because of the issues, not the person, given the upcoming Supreme Court openings and Hillary Clinton as the alternative.

During his reign, a cultish tribalism developed, a radical departure from the previous pragmatic means-to-an-end approach. This campaign used Christianity as a weapon in order to elevate a political figure who rejects the idea that boys cannot become girls and opposes restrictions on abortion. The self-inflicted scar on Christianity that results from Christian conservatives’ adoration of Trump also butchers conservatism.

Sadly, ideology turned into worship and pragmatism became blatantly tribalistic.

I say this without holding back: repentance is required for this idolatry.

To be clear, I look for two types of Trump voters: the pragmatic and the Trumpist.

The Trumpster support Trump no matter what and won’t even voice criticism of him when it’s most necessary.
The Trumpster respond to Trump’s opponents with brash, out-of-context remarks. Context is only important to Trumpists when they are defending their candidate’s remarks.
The Trumpster is a sheep who, rather than holding Trump responsible for the conservative principles he was elected to promote, lets Trump tell the story of conservatism.
