Watchman: Pentagon Orders U.S. Forces to Prepare for Deployment

Due to recent escalation by Iran, Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin has ordered an unknown number of military men to prepare to deploy to the Middle East on Saturday.

"I have placed an additional number of forces on preparedness to deploy orders as part of prudent contingency planning to increase their readiness and ability to quickly respond as required," Austin said in a prepared press release.

The Pentagon has already placed 2,000 troops on high alert in case they are called to deploy to the region. Austin did not specify how many troops will be called up.

Austin also revealed that the Terminal High Altitude Area Defense battery, as well as additional Patriot battalions, have been activated to protect US forces in the region.

THAAD is a combat-proven, highly effective defense against short-, medium-, and intermediate-range ballistic missile threats.

Following lengthy conversations with President Biden about recent escalation by Iran and its proxy forces throughout the Middle East region, I directed a series of additional steps today to significantly enhance the Department of Defense posture in the region. These actions will strengthen regional deterrent measures, provide force protection for US forces in the region, and aid in Israel's defense.

First, I shifted the USS Dwight D. Eisenhower Carrier Strike Group's maneuver to the Central Command area of responsibility. This carrier strike group joins the USS Gerald R. Ford Carrier Strike Group, which is presently deployed in the Eastern Mediterranean Sea. It will boost our capabilities and ability to respond to a variety of contingencies, as well as increase our force posture.

I've also ordered the deployment of a Terminal High Altitude Area Defense (THAAD) battery and additional Patriot battalions to various places throughout the region to increase force protection for US soldiers.

Finally, as part of sensible contingency preparation, I have placed an increased number of forces on readiness to deploy instructions to strengthen their readiness and ability to respond fast as needed.

I will continue to examine our regional force posture requirements and consider deploying additional assets as needed.
