In a late-night address aired on South Korea’s YTN news channel on Dec. 3, President Yoon Suk Yeol announced the declaration of martial law. Yoon, a member of the People Power party, stated that martial law was essential due to the obstruction of government operations by his political opposition, which holds control over South Korea’s national assembly. “They are undermining the judiciary through intimidation of judges and the impeachment of numerous prosecutors, while also incapacitating the executive branch by impeaching the minister of public administration and security, the chairman of the Korea Communications Commission, the chairman of the Board of Audit and Inspection, and the minister of national defense,” Yoon stated.
