In this age of grace it may seem strange to think of someone being handed over to satan. That they are still breathing yet they have no more possibility for redemption. But, that’s exactly what Paul says in 1Tim.1:20. Speaking of 2 people by name he prays for their destruction by delivering them to Satan. These are not just people who Paul was angry with. In fact, it wasn’t about that at all. These are 2 who used their worldly influence with others to encourage them to blaspheme God. With the hope of destroying the possibility for these others to come to a saving faith in Jesus. More than likely these 2 people Paul handed over to Satan for destruction were demon possessed. To be sure, the church is not called to run America, but the church is called to be a clarion voice in the public square, calling public officials as well as the public itself back to the abiding moral principles of the laws of nature and nature’s God. Public officials are servants of God, according to Romans 13, whether they know it or not, and it is the job of the servants of God, who fill our pulpits, to faithfully remind public officials of their accountability to God and his truth. Today I want to look at another aspect to the synagogue of Satan question. And another reason that makes Israel an unlikely candidate for this designation. And that is the idea that because there are evidently Israelis who do not possess the DNA of Old Testament Israel they can not be the Israel of God. Even though they claim to be. And while considering this it occurred to me that, at least in my opinion, those who believe the Israel in the land today are not the Israel of the Old Testament got this all wrong. In fact, they got this exactly backwards. What makes an Israelite and Israelite? Is it their DNA? Or is it the God in whom they have believed and serve? Or is it both?
