With the rise of Black Lives Matter extremism, calls to defund the police, that were unthinkable a year ago, are becoming reality. In Austin, TX, which is a hotbed for the anti-police movement, billboards have gone up at the entrance to the city warning about this. 

Last month, the Austin city council voted to defund the city’s police, cutting $150 million in funds to their police. While this move is extreme enough, the city council still isn’t done, and is calling for the city’s police station to be blown up.

Since this move, crime in Austin has gone way up, with their murder rate increasing over 60%, a trend that the mainstream media is blaming on coronavirus, instead of the police being defunded.

So in response, The Texas Municipal Police Association (TMPA), which calls itself “the Voice of Texas Law Enforcement,” is raising the alarm.

The group now has at least two billboards placed just outside the city warning visitors about the defunded police department.

One is placed on the west side of I-35, facing north, one mile south of FM 1325.

Another is on the west side of I-35, facing south, just north of Burleson in Kyle, before exit 248.

Since the vote to defund the police, Texas Governor Greg Abbott has said that he will have state police take over law enforcement in the city if need be. This is a statement that TMPA has praised.

“The safety of Austin citizens and visitors has never been more at risk from dangerous policies propagated by their own locally elected officials,” TMPA Executive Director Kevin Lawrence said. “We applaud Governor Abbott’s consideration of a legislative proposal that would put the control of the Austin Police Department under state authority.”
