JESUS “TAKETH AWAY” SIN BY PURGING THE LAW FROM THE CONSCIENCE- Heb.9:13,14

By Edward O’Hara,

For if the blood of bulls and of goats, and the ashes of an heifer sprinkling the unclean, sanctifieth to the purifying of the flesh: How much more shall the blood of Christ, who through the eternal Spirit offered himself without spot to God, purge your conscience from dead works to serve the living God?” Heb.9:13,14

“Then said he, Lo, I come to do thy will, O God. He taketh away the first, that he may establish the second.” Heb.10:9

In these passages we see the difference between forgiveness of sins and their being taken away. Forgiveness was possible by the law because the sins of the past year are dealt with by the sacrifices of bulls and goats. As Heb.9:13 plainly says.

But, after the sacrifices were done any sins the Israelite committed going forward were once again counted against him. So that he would have to go back and do those sacrifices again to receive forgiveness for these new sins. This is why Heb.10:1 says the law “can never with those sacrifices which they offered year by year continually make the comers thereunto perfect.”

This is true because only under the law is a man’s sins imputed to him. And only against the one who sinned. Ez.18:20, Rom.4:15 and 5:13 attest to this fact.

And Heb.10:3 tells us that the sacrifices they were commanded to do were a constant reminder of sin. Making it impossible for the Jew to think of anything other than sin and its forgiveness under the law. Even if he was not doing any of these sins.

This is why in Rom.10 we read “For it is not possible that the blood of bulls and of goats should take away sins.” Because by them sin was ever before them.

This is why we need to understand the difference Paul is explaining here between forgiveness of sins and their being taken away. Because if they are taken away Paul says the conscience has been purged from those dead works that were needed to attain forgiveness.

For this purge to be possible and their sin to be take away, the legal system by which their imputation was made possible, Jesus’ sacrifice was needed in order that an end to the legal system by which sin was empowered could come.

Empowered by the law, sin enslaves men to a system that would never allow those under it to be free from it. Taken away only when a final once for all sacrifice has been offered. A sacrifice for which Jesus came. Which is why Jesus said “If the Son therefore shall make you free, ye shall be free indeed.”

This is why on the cross Jesus was able to say “It is finished”. Because now that the final once for all sacrifice had been done, the law and the imputation of sins under the law is taken away.

So the Jew who never experienced a time when sins were not imputed could, because “where there is no law there was no transgression”. Rom.4:15. A time like that which those from Adam till Moses lived in.

Finished because of Jesus’ sacrifice so that the Israelite who was once held accountable for any violation under the law would now only be held accountable for his faith in Jesus. And not to commandments written in stone. And the sacrifices it mandated that forced their minds to be constantly focused on sins.

Now as Heb.9:14 says, “How much more shall the blood of Christ, who through the eternal Spirit offered himself without spot to God, purge your conscience from dead works to serve the living God?”

So what we are shown here is that for sin to no longer have dominion over the Jew his conscience had to be purged from those dead works of the law. Dead works of animal sacrifices to be a constant reminder of the sins defined by the law. Which was the cause for the Jew to be a slave to sin by the law.

A law as Paul says in Rom.7:1-4 that the Jew is bound to as long as it, or in the analogy her husband, lives. And only when the law is dead, or taken away as Heb.10:9 says it has been, is the Jew free to marry another. Even Him who has raised from the dead. So that now they can begin to bring forth fruit unto God.

So this is why even though there was forgiveness under the law that was accomplished through the shedding of the blood of bulls and goats. And had nothing to do with the erroneous teaching that Jews gained forgiveness by looking forward to the cross. The Jew even though his past sins were forgiven still needed Jesus.

Because only through faith in Jesus as the final once for all sacrifice for sins under the law is the law taken away. And his consciousness of sins by the law.

So that for the believing Jew there is no longer any imputation of sins defined by the law. The imputation that was by the law that required the Jew to sacrifice animals over and over again.

So that now the Jew is free to worship Jesus without any consideration for sins as defined by the law. The kind of consideration that otherwise would enslave them to sin. That without it makes them free to serve Jesus with their whole spirit, soul, and strength. Without the encumbrances of those dead works the law required.

So this is why for the Jew sin being forgiven is different from sin being taken away. For the Jew it means freedom from the works of the law. And for the gentile who never had the law it makes possible his being joined in a covenant with God that he never had before.

And now that Jesus has come, He is the intersection point for Jew and gentile that makes of the 2 one new man as Eph.2 says. Paul saying here that “he is our peace, who hath made both one, and hath broken down the middle wall of partition between us;

15 Having abolished in his flesh the enmity, even the law of commandments contained in ordinances; for to make in himself of twain one new man, so making peace;

16 And that he might reconcile both unto God in one body by the cross, having slain the enmity thereby:

17 And came and preached peace to you which were afar off, and to them that were nigh.

18 For through him we both have access by one Spirit unto the Father.”

This is another reason why it was expedient that Jesus “taketh away the first to establish the second.” This is why He “abolished in His flesh the enmity”, the separation, the law caused between Jew and gentile. Because as long as the first covenant remained in force Jews and gentiles would remain forever separated by that law. Because it was given for the Jews to keep, not gentiles.

And because the life the Jew needed is not and never has been available by the works of the law. But, only through the righteousness of faith. A righteousness that has now been manifested in Jesus. He needs Jesus for eternal life no matter how well he has kept the law.

This is why when it is falsely preached that “we are not under the law but we still need to keep it”. Or when someone like Hal Lindsey says “If a man could keep the law he would not need Jesus”. We can recognize this as a tool of the devil to cause men to cling to the law for righteousness. When the righteousness that gives life can only be had through faith in Jesus apart from the law.

Now knowing that forgiveness was always available to Jews under the law. And that the forgiven Jew still needed Jesus. We come to the crux of the purpose of this message.

And that is why since Jesus’ sacrifice has taken away the imputation of sins do men believe they must continually come to God asking for the forgiveness of sins? Answer: Because they are being taught to believe this by men who are clinging to principles that are part of a dead system that was part of a different covenant. By being taught in seminaries and the RCC the doctrine of original sin and sin nature.

Men who believe they must continually plead with God for forgiveness. Even for sins they do not know they have committed. Because they are men who are bound to the law. And do not yet know the love of God that alone has the power to purge their conscience from those dead works that were by the law.

Simply put, those who believe they must continually ask God for forgiveness of their sins are practicing as those who are under law and not under grace. This means that Roman Catholicism and her Protestant daughters are practicing what I like to refer to as Judaism for gentiles. A works based gospel.

Because these teach that they must continually return to God asking for forgiveness of sins defined by the law. Because if they don’t their bad works will condemn them to hell. Which is by definition the salvation by works gospel that in Gal.1 Paul said is a perversion of the truth. And makes them anathema who teach it.

To facilitate this perversion the RCC created the confessional. Which was really just the means by which she kept tabs on the people. While convincing them it was for their good spiritually. And Protestant pastors use the need for constant confession of sins as a means of creating a guilt complex in people as a means of control. And to pilfer many of their money.

Both completely rejecting Paul’s teaching that “he who is dead is free from sin”. And “sin no longer has any dominion over you because ye are not under law but under grace.” Because those who were once under the law who have believed are no longer accountable to keep the law. And instead teach that as long as a man is in this body of flesh no one can be free from sin.

Fulfilling Paul’s prophecy that said “This know also, that in the last days perilous times shall come.

2 For men shall be lovers of their own selves, covetous, boasters, proud, blasphemers, disobedient to parents, unthankful, unholy,… Having a form of godliness, but denying the power thereof… Ever learning, and never able to come to the knowledge of the truth.” 2Tim.3:1-7

Not because the law is bad or worthless. Paul said in Gal.3:19 the law had accomplished its purpose for Israel when Jesus came. But, because by Jesus becoming the final once for all sacrifice for sin all men can now be joined in a New and better Covenant that has better promises.

No longer tied to a system of continually bringing sacrifices to God for forgiveness. But, have been purged now from dead works under the law to serve the living and true God.

With no more consciousness whatsoever of sins defined by the law. But, now only responding to the sin of unbelief. The only sin Jesus said the Holy Spirit is reproving the world of since He left to be with the Father.

This is why 1John1:8,9 speaks of a one time need to ask God for forgiveness. And not a returning over and over as Jews did under the law. Because John is explaining to the believing Jew that the one asking for forgiveness in this passage is one who has not yet trusted in Jesus. Which is why John said “he who says he has no sin is a liar and the truth(Jesus) is not in him.”

Because not believing in Jesus is the sin he is confessing that “cleanses him from all unrighteousness.” Not some unrighteousness as was true for the Jews under the law when they did their sacrificing. But, all unrighteousness.

Making him righteous by faith in Jesus. In a covenant where there is no law and sin is not imputed. So that he no longer thinks in terms of the law to define sin. He now thinks in terms of relationship with Jesus to define sin.

This is why Paul said “whatsoever is not of faith is sin.” So that now he is able to “approach the throne of grace with boldness.” A boldness that comes from knowing that everything that God does is based on, and motivated by, His love. A love that is the reason Jesus came.

A love that delivers from death to life. From wrath to peace. And from sin to righteousness. By joining men to God by faith in Jesus in a way that was never possible under the law. By creating a spirit in men that was never there before. A spirit that is needed for men to be able to worship God in spirit and in truth.

And Paul says if we will confess with our mouth the Lord Jesus. And believe in our hearts that He has raised from the dead. We shall be saved. Because it is not by works of constant confession of sins defined by the law that we are saved. Which is the equivalent of sacrifices done under the law. But, by the righteousness of faith.

The Jew trusting that once for all time Jesus has taken away the system by which they were made slaves to sin. And the gentile trusting in Jesus in turning from idols. Making the way through the wall of death that separated men from heaven by His resurrection. So that by following Him we can go through the way He made for us into eternal life and immortality.

If you will do this then you will be made a child of God by spiritual birth and heir to His kingdom. If you will do this then you will have eternal life. If you will do this then you will live with God in heaven for all eternity. If you will do this… then I will see you there or in the air!
