Was there an eternal law in existence before the law was given through Moses? I mean, is the notion that some profess about a “moral law” that is eternal a Biblical notion? Can this notion be proved from the scriptures?

Bible Overview | RayStedman.org

There are a lot of people who say they believe the Bible that thinks it can be. They think the law was even in the garden and that it was there from eternity past because to them the law is actually an eternal part of God. They believe the Bible teaches that there has always been the law that men have always been held accountable for keeping. And that when men do not keep it there has always been a penalty for that. Is this an accurate assessment of what the Bible teaches about the law? My contention is that this is absolutely not an accurate assessment of what the Bible teaches. And the fact that so many teach that it is has become one of the biggest problems in religion regarding who they teach God is, who Jesus is, and what the atonement was for. Which means that it perverts every major doctrine the Bible teaches.

Some will say that we must keep the law because the New Covenant is just a continuation of the Old Covenant with extra grace so that we are not condemned to death even though we should be. Others say we are not under the Old Covenant but we still must keep the law because it is eternal. And when we don’t there is a penalty we still pay for it. And still, others will say that even though we are not under the law we still must keep it because obedience to God’s law is how we show our love for Him. And that by keeping it God is able to bless us.

What Is the Difference between Public Law and Private Law?

Some even make the law something all men must keep by giving it a different name. They make up a “moral law” which they say is the eternal law, that is somehow not the same as the written law that happens to be the only law ever given in the Bible. But, when asked what the difference is between this “moral law” and the written law, their explanation shows it to be the same thing. So that what we see is that there really is no difference between the two at all. Except that to them one is eternal and the other is temporary. And that this is true even though no one in the Bible ever said plainly that there is a “moral law”.
Paul addresses this in a very interesting statement he makes in Rom.5 after discussing the sin of Adam and the sins of those who came after him. He says “For until the law”. Wait! Shouldn’t what Paul just said here give those pause who say the law is eternal? It should. Because Paul just said here that there was a time before the law that was “until the law”. But, it gets better.

Paul shows that this is the only law there ever was by telling us “For until the law sin was in the world but sin is not imputed when there is no law”. These “sins in the world” are the sin of Adam and any that may have been committed by the rest of mankind until the law came through Moses that Paul spoke of in the verse right before this one. Paul says that these sins were not imputed “because sin is not imputed when there was no law“. Did you see that? Paul just said that the reason these sins before the law were not imputed, is because sin is not imputed when— there— is— no— law.

So let’s get this straight. Paul not only says there was a time before there was law. But, to make sure that someone won’t come along later trying to make God the law by making it eternal, he says that sin was not imputed because there was no law. So the notion that some have who say there was a “moral law” before the written law came through Moses that has forever carried a penalty for its a violation is rejected here. Because Paul says there was no imputation of sins before this law came through Moses specifically because there was no law.

This means that there could have been no law whether one calls it “moral law” or written law that caused sins to be imputed until the law came through Moses. So that what we are really seeing here is that there can be no penalty for the sin of Adam, for himself or anyone else, because there was no law. So this false teaching of Adam’s sin is imputed to all men that have permeated the Roman Catholic and her daughters the evangelical protestant religions is rejected by what Paul taught here. And we also see here that the law had a beginning. And something that has a beginning is by definition not eternal.

Another aspect of this is in Paul and Ezekiel making it very clear that the son does not bear the iniquity of the sins of the father. This means that the penalty of sin does not pass to men either by inheritance or imputation as the false religions say it does. So all of that false teaching flies in the face of what Paul shares with us in Rom.5. And what Ezekiel shares with Israel in Ez.18:20. The importance of this can not be overstated. Because what we see here is that death is not a penalty for sin, either for the one who committed it unless they are under the law nor for their offspring no matter what.

In Gal.3:19 Paul makes it clear that the law was “added because of transgressions”. By Paul saying that it was added means it wasn’t there until it was added, right? And that it was added because of transgressions shows that its purpose was to apply penalties/curses that we see in Deut.28 for its violation that was also never there before, right? Because sin is not imputed when there is no law. These penalties were only for Israel because the law came through their deliverer Moses.
So this law was added to the covenant God already had with Israel through Abraham. Paul also makes it abundantly clear in Eph.2:12 that Gentiles (all who are not Israelites) were not part of any covenants that Israel had with God. So any notion of penalty had it’s beginning and end with the law given through Moses and were only for Israel while they are under that law. It did not exist before that because Paul said that “where there is no law(referring to all those who lived before Moses) sin is not imputed”. This is why Paul said, “For as many as are of the works of the law are under the curse” in Gal.3:10.

MUHAMMAD ALI BEN MARCUS: WORDPRESS - WE ARE AGAINST STATE VIOLENCE AND TERRORISM

We see then that the law has a beginning point and an expiration date. Given in Gal.3:19 to be 430 years after the promise to Abraham. And the expiration when the seed to whom the promise was given shall come. That is Jesus. Because when Jesus came His death gave power to the New Covenant(Heb.9:15). This shows that the law had a starting point and an end. Well, really just a pause until it ends at the end of the millennium. Which by definition means the law can not be eternal.
There is one caveat to this however that I made mention of in the last paragraph by saying “really just a pause”. And we can see this “pause” in Daniel’s 70 weeks prophecy. In it, we see the division between the 1st 1/2 of the 70th week of Daniel and the last 1/2 in Dan.9:27. The division has shown when we read “in the middle of the week he causes the sacrifices and oblations to cease”. Because the ‘middle of the week” was when Jesus died on the cross. Because it was Jesus’ death on the cross that caused the sacrifices and oblations to become the “dead works” that Heb.9:14 says Israel would be purged from when they trust in Jesus. And they were the “overspreading of abominations” that Dan.9:27 says “makes it desolate”. Which was the destruction of the temple in 70ad?

But, since Jesus’ sacrifice that caused the sacrifices and oblations to cease because any done after that would just be dead works and the overspreading of abominations, was in the middle of the week. There is still 1/2 of the week left to be fulfilled. And Paul said in Rom.11:25 that this fulfillment would happen only after “the fulness of the Gentiles comes in”. Why would Paul say it like this? Because until the New Covenant the Gentiles were without God and without covenant in the world as Eph.2:12 says. Which means that because Gentiles are included in the New Covenant, Paul is saying that only when their fulness was reached, a time God set in eternity past, would there be an end of the New Covenant and a return to the Old Covenant to finish the final 1/2 of the week left for Israel in Daniel’s 70 weeks prophecy.

Jesus gave Israel a clue in John5:43 as to how this would play out when He told them, “I have come in my Father’s name, and ye receive me not”, which gave them what was the 1st 1/2 of the final week of Daniel’s prophecy. Because we see in Gal.3:17 that it was Jesus who confirmed the covenant with Israel. And when He said, “if another shall come in his own name, him ye will receive” He gave them the clue for the final 1/2 of the final week in the prophecy. What is possibly a false confirmation of the covenant. And since we know that there is a “time of the Gentiles” described by Paul in Rom.11:25 where their fulness must come in before the last 1/2 of the week can be finished. We know that the last 1/2 of the week is yet future. It is the time of great tribulation that the prophets and Jesus spoke of that is also written about in Revelation. So that we are now living in the time of “pause” for the Old covenant.

So we see that there is a time in between the 1st half and last half of the final week during which we see Paul made a minister to both Israelites and Gentiles. While the rest were apostles only to Israelites(Gal.2:9). During this time of “pause” for the Old, Covenant Paul was the minister of what he called “the mystery that was hidden from all ages past”(Col.1:26). So Jesus did not preach the same message Paul did because Paul’s message was hidden from all ages past. Because Jesus was teaching under a different covenant than Paul and the rest of the apostles were. So during this time of “pause” for the Old Covenant, we see that eternal life is by grace through faith without works as we see in Eph.2:8,9 and Gal.2:16. But, during the time of Daniel’s 70 weeks prophecy, that is both before and after this “pause”, eternal life would be by keeping the commandments + faith in Christ as we see in Mt.19:16-22 and Rev.14:12. These show that the time of the New Covenant we are now living in, the New Covenant that some call “the church age” because before this time there was no entity called the church, is a time when eternal life comes by very different means than it does under the Old Covenant.

So this is the caveat that splits the 70th week of Daniel into 2 parts. A 1st half and the last half. Because Jesus’ ministry to Israel under the law will resume during the great tribulation(the last half) because it is a resumption of the final week in Daniel’s prophecy that has yet to be fulfilled. A prophecy that is fulfilled under the law. When we put all this together we see a law that is temporary, not eternal. Because we see it has a beginning with Moses and an ending with the completion of the millennium. Because the millennium is the promised kingdom that was promised to Israel under the law.

But, what we see in 1Cor.13 is Paul telling us what is truly eternal. And it isn’t the law of God. And it isn’t hoped or faith. It is the love that God is. And because God is love, and God is eternal, love is eternal. This is why the spiritual man is led by the Spirit of God and not the law. Because the eternal love of God is shed abroad in the spiritual man by the Holy Spirit who leads them by that love into all truth. And because the law is not God it is not eternal. That’s why the law was only given because of transgressions. It’s only there to deal with the natural man in a natural kingdom. So as a spiritual man I’d like to take you to my leader.

What does it mean that God is spirit? – Christians Ascent

Have you believed in Jesus? Have you been born of the Spirit so you too can inherit eternal life? So that you too can be led by the Spirit of God? If you are reading this God is calling you. He loves you and wants you to know Him. Because knowing Him is eternal life.John17:3. So if you do not know Him, but now would really want to, then please take the time right now to pray and confess Jesus as Lord of your life. And believe that He has raised from the dead. If you do believe in Him then pray something like this and you will be saved: Dear Jesus, I believe you. Thank you for joining with me in death so that by conquering death by your resurrection I could join with you in life. Thank you that you raised from the dead so that I could raise from the dead too by trusting in, clinging to, and relying solely on you. Thank you for giving me a new spirit now Lord so that I can live with you in heaven forever. In Jesus’ name, amen.

By praying a prayer similar to this one and really meaning it from your heart you will be saved from death to life. From sin to righteousness. And from the wrath to peace with God. Now when you begin reading the Bible and believing what it plainly says it will begin to change the way you think and believe. Because when you trust in Jesus you leave the old life behind where you were only able to relate to and trust in what has been made. And now will be equipped for heaven because you are no longer only natural flesh and blood, but are made a spiritual being ready to inherit God’s spiritual kingdom called heaven. It is because of Jesus’ resurrection that He is the only WAY, THE TRUTH, AND THE LIFE. Because only Jesus has broken through the wall of death that the flesh and blood natural body can never get through. Only by the new birth are we made ready to receive the spiritual body that can go through the wall of death as Jesus’ did first.

God Bless!
