Stop the Cycle Before It Gets Uglier

David’s decision to stay at home rather than engage in combat started a chain of wickedness that was carried even farther. David intended to have Bathsheba’s husband sleep with her in order to conceal his adultery. He would then believe that her child was his own. When the ark of God and his fellow soldiers were in tents on the battlefield, the obedient Uriah refused to have sex with his wife. David made a greater effort. Uriah remained faithful even after he got him intoxicated. Then, by failing to defend him in combat, he sent a letter outlining a plan for his death. David would kill Bathsheba’s husband and take her as his wife if he was unable to atone for his transgression.

Only Joab will ever know, according to King David. God is aware! David assumed the letter would stay a secret. However, the content of his letter has now been read by the entire globe. We simply fool ourselves when we plan a sin to hide a sin and believe that our guile will prevent others from finding out. You will undoubtedly be exposed by your sin (Numbers 32:23b). The nation was aware of Bathsheba’s pregnancy, and Uriah’s passing would not be considered a coincidence. When David’s strategy was to preserve his reputation, he lost the respect of his country. Our sin always leads us farther than we intended to go and costs us more than we had anticipated.

Warning: Break the pattern before it gets worse. Pray for God’s and man’s pardon.
