Transit Workers Union Local 234 President Brian Pollitt is demanding answers from Gov. Josh Shapiro, Mayor Cherelle Parker, and SEPTA officials in the wake of a series of violent crimes plaguing Philadelphia’s mass transit system. These incidents have left our city in a state of unrest and fear.

Pollitt has been tirelessly advocating for the deployment of the National Guard on SEPTA, just as New York City has done with the MTA, for the past four years. He believes that this measure is crucial in ensuring the safety and security of both transit workers and passengers.

Acknowledging the challenges faced by New York City, Pollitt commends their governor for taking decisive action. He believes that Philadelphia should follow suit and prioritize the protection of its citizens.

It is high time that our leaders take accountability for the escalating violence on and around our mass transit system. The safety of our community should be their utmost priority. We demand immediate action to restore peace and security to our city’s transportation network.

Last week, we discussed the shooting of 8 teenagers near a SEPTA bus in Northeast Philadelphia. This incident took place shortly after another shooting involving mass transit in Philadelphia, which left four injured and one dead.

The shooting occurred around 3 p.m. near Northeast High School, where students were waiting for a bus. Three attackers fired over 30 rounds from across the street, injuring eight teenagers.

Surveillance footage shows the assailants exiting a blue Hyundai Sonata, attacking as a bus arrived, and then fleeing the scene. The victims, aged between 15 and 17, included seven boys and a girl, with two in critical condition.

Descriptions of the gunmen have been provided, and the shooting led to a lockdown at a nearby elementary school. Two SEPTA buses were hit during the incident, but no passengers were injured.

Police have seized a car believed to be linked to the shooting, a blue Hyundai Sonata found parked in the Olney area of the city. The vehicle matches the description of the getaway car seen in surveillance footage.

Mayor Cherelle Parker stated last week: “We are here today to say that enough is enough. Every law enforcement agency in Philadelphia is working together to ensure that all necessary resources are available to solve these crimes.”
