Watchman: Hard Facts…

The Downward Spiral Of Israel

The book of Judges portrays Israel’s cultural downfall after arriving in Canaan and before establishing a monarchy. This deterioration follows a pattern:

•Israel commits idolatry and other evils.
•God lets Israel’s enemies conquer or torment and raid them.
•Israel cry out to God when they have no other option.
God rescues through “judges,” a unique position depicted in this month’s featured passage.•Israel’s problems temporarily ease. This usually only lasts the last judge’s life.

This motif appears seven times in Judges. Some judges in the book overlap. This says that Israel was oppressed by numerous adversaries before Saul became king. The first cycle, with Othniel (Judges 3:7–11), is most concisely portrayed.

After Othniel, Israel sins, is defeated, and asks God for help. God gives Israel a few years of independence and peace through Ehud and Shamgar. Again: sin and conquest, God sends Deborah and Barak. God sends Gideon again, etc. The primary part of the book shows seven notable examples of this pattern.

Each cycle repeats and worsens. Judges ends with Israel in spiritual and cultural ruin. This is so horrible that the judges become more unethical throughout the book. Samson, the last judge, cannot give Israel true “rest.”

The seven cycles follow these characters’ stories:

1. Othneil (3:7–11)
2. Shamgar and Ehud (3:12–31)
3. Deborah/Barak (4:1–5:31)
4. Gideon (6:1–8:32)
5. Tola and Jair followed Abimelech, a dictatorial son of Gideon (8:33–10:5).
6. Jephthah, Ibzan, Elon, Abdon (10:6–12:15)
7. Samson (13:1–16:31)

These seven stories repeat a “cycle of sin.” As Israel’s guilt worsens, her deliverance becomes less effective and her judges less pure. The last two stories (Judges 17—20) demonstrate that the people have nearly collapsed.

Understanding Judges demands clarity: the “seven cycles of sin” were not seven ways Israel fell. Seven times Israel followed the same pattern. Humanity’s intransigence and God’s forbearance are on display.
