Experts have warned that two people have died and two have contracted the extremely deadly Middle East Respiratory Syndrome (MERS).

The nameless victims, two men and two women, were diagnosed with the disease in Saudi Arabia between August 13, 2023, and February 1, 2024, according to the World Health Organization (WHO). MERS incidences have decreased "substantially" since the COVID outbreak began in 2020.

All four were between the ages of 59 and 93, with underlying medical issues that could have exacerbated the sickness.

The virus, known as camel flu because it is typically transmitted by infected camels, kills roughly 36%—more than one-third—of those infected.

One of the four people afflicted in this current incident owned a camel, and another was related to a camel owner.

The other two instances had no direct or indirect interaction with camels and had not consumed raw camels in the weeks preceding the onset of the sickness.

Between September 15, 2023 and October 26, 2023, all infected individuals experienced usual symptoms such as fever, cough, and shortness of breath.

PANDEMIC THREAT, NO PESTILENCE.

MERS is a relatively new disease that was initially diagnosed in Saudi Arabia in 2012. Since then, there have been 2,200 cases and 939 deaths.

The majority of cases are reported from the Arabian Peninsula, but several have been detected elsewhere, including one in the United Kingdom in 2018 and another in 2013.

The bug is a member of the coronavirus family, which can cause illnesses ranging from the common cold to severe acute respiratory syndrome.

MERS is more lethal but less contagious than COVID-19, its sister virus.

The WHO reported that MERS cases have decreased "substantially" since the COVID epidemic began in 2020.

The UN body indicated that the COVID virus or vaccination could provide further protection against MERS.

Alternatively, virus protection methods implemented during lockdowns, such as mask-wearing and social separation, could explain the decrease in cases.

The WHO has previously identified MES as one of few diseases, along with the mysterious disease X, an unknown pathogen, that have the potential to cause an epidemic but have no specific treatment or vaccination.

The cluster reported from Saudi Arabia was detected in three locations: Riyadh, Eastern, and Qassim.

According to the World Health Organization (WHO), "The four new cases are believed to have acquired MERS-CoV infection locally and not to have transmitted it further."
