The life of Jesus is the consummate illustration of how a person who is filled with the Holy Spirit ought to live.
The life of Jesus was the perfect illustration of how a person who is filled with the Holy Spirit ought to live. His passing served as the epitome of what it means to be a believer in the here and now. The centurion had witnessed a great number of people being crucified to death. The procedure was a time-consuming and nasty one. Jesus’ death was unprecedented in every way. Despite being in the most excruciating anguish imaginable, He expressed forgiveness to those who were carrying out His execution.
Alongside Him, there was a sense of assurance for the victim who had repented. He put an end to the custody dispute with his mother. He stated that His labor had been finally completed. Instead of clinging to life, He surrendered His Spirit to the control of the Father. It is likely that the centurion and his troops found his bravery and acceptance to be just as stunning as the physical events that took place.
The land was covered in darkness for a period of three hours, beginning at midday and continuing until the offering of the sacrifice in the afternoon (Matthew 27:45). It is my belief that the thick darkness that could be felt was not an eclipse or cloud cover, but rather the thick darkness that reminded me of the curse that was placed upon Egypt (Exodus 10:21).
There was a significant earthquake that occurred the moment that Jesus let go of His body and unleashed His Spirit. It was said in Matthew 27:52-53 that people in Jerusalem saw saints who had passed away strolling around the city. Before this particular crucifixion, the centurion had never seen anything even quite like to it. The feeling of wonder that he experienced prompted him to acknowledge that Jesus must be the Son of God.
It is possible that this centurion and his troops took part in the scourging and ridiculing of Jesus; yet, when Jesus passed away, they were shivering in fear. It is highly likely that they were aware of the allegations that Jesus asserted that he was not only the Son of God but also the King of the Jews. At this point, they admit that they have come to the conclusion that it is accurate. At that same time, it is possible that the petition that Jesus said, which was “Father, forgive them, for they know not what they do” (Luke 23:34), was answered.
Think about the fact that the death of the martyrs has been one of the most effective means of converting people throughout the course of history. Both in life and in death, they followed the example that Jesus set.
Matthew 27:54
54 When the centurion and those who were with him, keeping watch over Jesus, saw the earthquake and what took place, they were filled with awe and said, “Truly this was the Son of God!”
