As the Trump and Republicans fight for a tenuous congressional majority in November’s midterm elections, he faces widespread public disapproval of his war on Iran.
A recent Reuters/Ipsos survey indicated that an approval rating of the war among Americans is at 35%. Democrats were chosen by registered voters by 37% to 36% over Republicans when asked which political party handles war and “terrorism” better.
Since Reuters/Ipsos polling started asking the issue in December 2024, when Republicans had a 39 percent lead over Democrats with 28 percent, this is the first occasion that Democrats have been in the lead.
Is Iran going to be able to withstand economic sanctions?
Professor Mehran Kamrava of Georgetown University in Qatar expressed skepticism about the efficacy of Washington’s economic pressure campaign and said that talks between Iran and the US are moving at a snail’s pace.
He brought up the fact that the Gulf nations hosting US military bases and assets have been under intense Iranian pressure due to the missile and drone attacks.
Based on his observations, he concluded that Iran is attempting to force its regional neighbors—specifically, Qatar, the United Arab Emirates, Saudi Arabia, and Kuwait—into putting economic pressure on the United States in order to force it to engage with Iran.
As a countermeasure, the United States is imposing economic sanctions on Iran. According to him, this means that neither side is ready to “let’s sit down and negotiate”—the critical first step in reaching a resolution.
Since the Iranian leadership is not subject to the same level of internal political pressure as the Trump administration, Kamrava expressed his skepticism that US economic pressure will be effective.
Although Iran’s political system is inherently oppressive, it is important to remember that Tehran is facing immense economic strain. “The decision-makers don’t really care about the middle class’s predicament,” he stated.
The speaker expressed uncertainty about the effectiveness of the current strategy, stating, “They want to stay in power.”
