There were two main groups of religious leaders in Judaism during Jesus’ time. They were the Pharisees and the Sadducees. They had a lot of different beliefs, but they did agree on one thing. The rich people thought they were better than everyone else. It was normal for them to call most people “sinners.” That would mean that these leaders didn’t think they were bad. What they wore made them stand out, and they didn’t want anyone to touch them. They were not ashamed of how much they knew about the Bible; instead, they were proud of how much they knew.
It says that Jesus was talking about what they were saying, but other parts of the Bible show that Jesus also warned them about how they were acting. They loved names of honor and being respected by men. But they didn’t deal with their own hearts. They prayed and did other religious things to show they were religious. They used the Bible to help other people, but not for their own lives. The worst thing about it is that they used the Bible to help themselves.
Jesus was warning them about what they were saying as well as religiosity and putting oneself above others. We should be more humble the more we know. The closer we are to God, the nicer we should be to other people. To be truly holy, one must first apply the Scriptures to their own heart. If you walk humbly with God, doing your religious task with care is only a good thing (Matthew 23:23; Micah 6:8).
